You are welcome - glad I could share this with everyone.
I think the biggest challenge we had with this project was getting it to market in the timeframe we had to work with. Since it was all new from the ground up and used very few parts common to the other garden tractors there was a lot more time in design and development. I would be glad to answer any questions.

Awesome hearing about the story of the xi series. Thank you Denny!
Do you know of any thoughts of making a 3 point hitch for it? Or was Toro sold on the clevis hitch? By the way, I love my 522xi. I thank you for all of your time and effort that you put into that tractor. Well done!

John you are correct - the Diesel was initialy an international model along with a 20 hp air cooled and a 20 hp liquid. Obviously things changed at some point. It would be interesting to find out who some of the people were that bought the first years tractors and what income groups they came from. Thank you mike - The clevis hitch was the only design mainly because it was easier to adapt attachments. I believe we did look at a 3 point just for feasablity but it didn't go far.

There isn't a Category "0" hitch available, although one RS member did fabricate one for his tractor. Lowell used a clevis hitch that I previously had on my 523Dxi, to use as a model to fabricate an improved 5xi clevis hitch that DougL3 mentioned. Last year I installed a Johnny Bucket Universal Sleeve Hitch on the diesel which allows me to use two attachments at the same time. Having only one hydraulic attachment system is another shortcoming.

Were there any posts regarding the development and fabrication of that Cat 0 three point for the xi series here on the forum? I hunted around a little and couldn't find anything.  If anyone following this thread had fabricated a Cat 0 to their xi, I would like to see pics and how you did it.  I was looking over the Cat 0 on my GT 14 and wondering how many parts from that style setup would work on an xi. I also was looking at the green/yellow 3 pt setups which are readily available and wondering I one of those could be modified as well...just thinking out loud I guess.
What about hydraulics?  Can line splitters be installed that would allow for a remote set of hydraulic ports?

image.thumb.jpg.989f4003689a20337acf2ff3image.thumb.jpg.6caf19856ae04c9dac447a7dWell guys--just like that I found one!  It isn't perfect, needs some TLC for sure but it is a genuine WH 523Dxi!  Came with a 60" deck and the 44" two stage snowblower!  I'm planning to go through all the filters and fluids just so I know that everything is fresh.  The only thing that really bothered me tonight while cutting with it was the engine temp gauge ran just a hair under the red the entire time.  I made sure the screen was clean and the fan was operating.  So, not sure if the gauge is a little goofy because the warning light never even flickered and it didn't travel into the red.  Other than that, I really enjoy my first cutting session on this heavy duty machine...

That was a trailer load with just those three items!  Glad I have a heavy duty tandem axle rig!

Nice find! It looks like a 1999 or 2000 523Dxi. It also has the improved mule which is easier to adjust tension on.

There are a couple of things to know when changing fluids.

  • I use Amsoil 10W-30 Diesel Oil formula, and found a NAPA replacement for the little Briggs oil filter that is a little bit longer for more filter media.
  • When changing oil, pour the new oil in slowly down the center of the fill. The head has small passage ways and can cause damage if flooded.
  • The radiator has two petcocks that are a long reach from the bottom (assuming the deck is off.) I used a long nose locking pliers to grab them. After I changed the antifreeze, I noticed that a small hand might be able to access them from the right side behind the engine.
  • After refilling the radiator, elevate the rear wheels to allow the radiator to "burp" any air pockets. This engine /radiator combo is installed "backwards" in the frame so the high point is actually towards the rear.
  • At 600 hours the lifter clearance needs to be checked/adjusted, and the head needs to be re-torqued.
  • Drain the fuel oil separator/filter before each use.
Good luck, and you will enjoy it!

Pacemaker Jack,
Nice find, it looks to be in very good shape.  You got the two big toys, the 60" deck and the two stage blower.  I previously had both and really liked them.  All the manuals you might need can be found on this site, or the Toro web site.  I can't help you with the diesel, both of mine were gas, but I now have a Kubota diesel and the fuel economy of the diesel over the gas is big.  My 522xi's were very thirsty, so I think you will enjoy the economy of the diesel.  Do you plan to use the snow blower?  Enjoy your new ride.  They are built like tanks, and are super comfortable and dependable.

Yes, very nice find. I love my 522, though the brake on the right side above the motion control pedal is a design flaw in my opinion. Other than that, and the lack of gauges, I haven't found anything not to like.

Brian, the brake pedal on the the right is sort of an industry standard. At least it's not high in the air like a Kubota BX. I find it easy to use, of course I have the three.
Switching to my other Wheel Horse tractors is interesting with two manuals and three hydros.

ditto, my 522 is "the king". Fas as I am concerned anyway. They  (the 5xi series) will catch on as more and more folks on red square hear the word.
glenn

edit: ditto means my like for the 5xi seRies, the way the pedals are set up is fine by me. No problems, no confusion. Just to clarify.

I would find it more normal beside the motion control. It takes some getting used to being above the motion control

I'm not sure what to think of the location yet.  I'm so used to nearly 30 years of GT hand controls that it will take a little while to get used to the foot control.  However, what little I've used it already, I like it.

I I think the 5xi series is one of the most incredible secrets in the wheel horse "universe".  I had no clue that series even existed until recently.  I was so impressed that I sold two other tractors to "make room" for my Dxi!

The xi series are awesome in my opinion. I love my 522. The only small issue, if I can call it that, is that it seems to be harder to swap my deck on and off compared to my 416 and 520. I can do the others quicker and with less hustle. Could it be that I haven't done it enough to get really good at it?
Its still an awesome tractor and I am sure that you will love yours as we love ours!

Perspective is an amazing thing.  I have a different brand of tractor that has a 60 deck.  It is literally an hour process to take it off or to put it back on!  When I took that big 60" off the Dxi in about 10 min, I was surprised.  It was a well thought out design, especially the drop down wheel to help move that monster out.  However, if you are used to an easier attachment process, I can see how it would seem more difficult.  I agree that the more you do something, the easier it gets!

Question 5xi owners---have any of you found a brighter version of the 1156 bulb for the headlights.  My most recent worker was a 682 Cub with 4411 sealed beam tractor headlights.  I'm used to how those lights would shine across the back yard.  These pale in comparison!  Looking for ideas--halogen or super brite LED???

I currently own a 520 LXI that I restored/refurbished and have been using it for mowing duties with a 48" deck. I love the machine and makes cutting the lawn a real pleasure. Surfing CL as I always do I came across a 522 xi with kwik way loader, 48" deck, plow dual real ags and a set of turfs, and rear weight box filled with concrete. I offered it to a friend who passed and ended up buying it due to the good deal. I figure I will end up keeping it. Used it a little tonight after unloading it and runs great with only 422 hours. The issue is the pto switch works for only about 10-15 seconds and then kicks off. I am hoping it is a switch issue and not the pto. Ordered a new oem switch from killians on line tonight. The tractor is a 2000.

hey steve, i saw that one to, the price was way low for what it was. I know guys go gaga for the loader itself,, I thought the pictures were nice, but the low hours were the best. The ad didnt say the deck size. When you get a chance post some pictures for the guys and best of luck.  glad to see a red square guy got it to.

You probably know this, but reverse will shut off the PTO if you don't turn the key under the seat. And maybe that circuit is screwy?

I forgot about that! My 520lxi does not have that option and I knew this did but forgot about it.

Jack, you can take the lens assembly apart with the eight clips. The dust seems to get in there and cut down the illumination. Clean it and polish the outer portion.  I put brighter halogen 1156 bulbs in which do help. If you Google the 5xi, in some countries in Europe they license the tractors. For that they put auxillary lighting on. Not too pretty but functional. Here are before (actually my 518xi) and after shots of the 520xi. I also painted the middle black to highlight the Wheel Horse. Since then I have experimented with putting LED flashers behind the lens for a clean look but the headlight actually overpowers the flasher.

I got my Dxi last year and I have the same issue with mine. The temp gauge runs at the high end of the green and sometimes into the yellow. I have ordered a new temperature sending unit, and will replace that next week. I am thinking it is an indicating problem.
I also noticed that when cold, with the radiator cap off, the antifreeze was flowing. I will replace the thermostat as well.
I will let you know what effect this makes.

Wow! What an improvement in functionality and looks.  I really like that center section painted black. In my opinion that is how it should've been done from the factory!  Not liking the auxiliary foreign lighting option.  I'll do what you did.  Thanks for the input.  I started last night by polishing the outer lens...

image.thumb.jpg.678b649bad33b1f7035ba8cf

I had polished the left hand side in this pic but hadn't gotten to the right side yet.  I was already amazed at the difference that made.

John, I am going to do the same thing to my light bucket. Looks great. Plus going to do the brighter bulb swap. Great idea...............kudos.
Also, to bad folks cant get a johnny bucket for these, in my opinion the kwik way loader is overkill on these and the 520s. Just my thoughts.
as big as the xi is,,,its not robust enough for the way folks overload things.

It's amazing how much dust gets in behind the lens over the years from cutting grass. Just a simple job to pop it off and rinse the silt out. I had thought of sealing it but didn't bother as it is easy to do.

Jack,
Take a close look at the headlight fixture, you currently have two bulbs in it.  The 5xi can actually take four bulbs, the extra two go to the outside of the existing ones.  From the back of the fixture, there is probably a piece of tape over the lamp socket holes, as supplied by the factory.  Order from Toro part number 95-7858 sidelight kit, and it will come with a wiring harness that wires into the existing harness, has the two new bulb sockets and bulbs.  Installation time of about 10 minutes and you have double the light.  I added it to both of my 5xi's when I had them, and was happy with the increased lighting.  The kit is currently listed for $37.05 on jackssmallengines.com, but you should be able to order it from any Toro dealer.
Hope this helps.
