Newbie here so please have patience.

I have a Kohler Magnum 12 hp motor: M12-471527 TRACTOR purchased 89/90

idles low and high fine but when I drive up a hill (23 degree hill) or over tree roots the engine starts to stall.

pulling choke does not help.

i did add an inline gas filter and with this filter it does thak about a minute of craking for it to start.

Also about 1 or 2 times a year the float gest stuck.

all help is appreciated.

Happy Holidays

Chris

Welcome, and sounds like it maybe flooding, sloshing gas up too far, does it puff black smoke when it stumbles??

Thanks for the quick response.

not 100% sure of the black smoke when it sputters.. but if i was to guess i would say yes.

I have definetly seen black smoke and back firing when i turn down the gas to qwickly.... and definetly if i turn down the gas and shut the engine right away.

If its to much gas, how do i adjust that?

Chris

That is definetly the cause for your backfiring. If you run the throttle at full and then stop and lower then throttle too quick and shut off the engine it tends to burn the leftover gas that was being sent through the carb.

As far as adjusting your gas flow? Maybe it needs a carb adjustment?

I'm going to say the carb needs cleaned and new needle and seat, and adjust the float.

It is easy to clean and put a kit in these carbs. You can buy the original Kohler kits from N.A.P.A. and there is information on the forum on how it is done. krazy_horse

Hi, Chris,

If it's a Magnum 12 of the '89-'90 era, I'm guessing the tractor is a 312-8 or 312-A? You mentioned that after adding the in-line filter it takes more cranking time to start. This coupled with the difficulty on an incline tells me the fuel pump may be getting weak. Not a big deal to change. I had this same set of symptoms on one of my 312's and eventually the fuel pump quit entirely. After I replaced the pump it's been running flawlessly ever since! If the engine has high hours a carb rebuild is probably a good bit of preventative maintenance to try.

Also, as mentioned above, the Magnum engines are notorious for backfiring if you throttle down from high rpm's and then kill the ignition. On all of mine I've learned to let them idle for about 30 seconds before shutting them off - no more backfires!

Last but not least, WELCOME TO :rs: !

I think part of the problem with the magnum engines are the carb. I can't remember the make, but my 314-8 has sputtered occasionally when turning up a hill or like you say, hitting a bump like a root. It's the nature of the carb. The fix is to find a Carter #28 or 30 carb like was used on the K series engines. That's what I'm going to do.

Yes, these engines will backfire if you throttle back quickly sometimes.

Fine tractor you got.

Good luck,

Bill

I have a WH 300 series with a Kohler Magnum 10 engine and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the choke cable and linkage set so it will work. The numbers on the engine label  are worn off the, so I cannot give anyone that information. Does anyone have a picture or can you head me in the right direction.

My arm for the linkage assembly is set at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock if that helps. There seems to be several different linkage rods for this engine.

      Thanks

      Hey all!

Replacing the drive belt on my 252-h. Anyone know the torque specification for the center screw when I put this pto clutch back on? I know it was on there tight it took a minute for the impact to break it loose. Thanks!

Hey all. I have a Electro 12 with a factory belly blade. It runs* and drives. I had used it to grade my driveway the last 6 yrs. Having moved I'm looking at my options on storing it or selling it. Frankly I have no idea what it is worth. I watched "ISaveTractors" video on 5 things to do with a new to you wheel horse/12hp kohler. (When i got it 6yrs ago) And went thru and did the adjustments and replaced the parts mentioned. It has been a good strong tractor for me until around July of this year. (2023)
*Around July it started dying after running 20-30min. I replaced the carb (Chinese Amazon purchase) with one from isavetractors web site. That seemed to help it idle smoother(the old carbs jets wouldnt adjust), but it still dies at around 20-30min.
      So I've got 2 questions.
      1. What is it worth? (As-Is) and
      2. What do I need to do to fix it?
      Thanks yall!
