chevyaddict83 39 #1 Posted December 4, 2012 Is this normal? Runs on cables, but not without battery. Am I missing something? Its an 89, 16hp onan. Sent from my 416-
TT-(Moderator) 1,129 #2 Posted December 5, 2012 It has battery ignition. No battery = no ignition If you haven't already screwed up the charging system, consider yourself lucky.
chevyaddict83 39 #3 Posted December 5, 2012 Scared now! How would one damage it with jumper cables? Im not understanding that part Sent from my 416-
TT-(Moderator) 1,129 #4 Posted December 5, 2012 Runs on cables, but not without battery. Did you try running it without a battery - or a good battery? That can burn up the rectifier/regulator and/or stator - especially if you had it running off jumper cables and then you unhooked them. The 'remove battery cable while engine is running' alternator test that works for some automobiles will not work on one of these tractors.
chevyaddict83 39 #5 Posted December 5, 2012 Ok. Lesson learned. Had it running off cables. Unhooked cables for, maybe 3-5 seconds. Now I have learned. Not doing a thing until friday. Sent from my 416-

chevyaddict83 39 #7 Posted December 12, 2012 So, it runs and drives, and lives!!!! Now my next obstacle is the choke cable. How do I free it up. It moves at the carburetor end, but not where you pull the knob at the dash. Sent from my 416-
midnight rambler 36 #8 Posted December 12, 2012 (edited) if you put some P B BLASTER down the knob end and that dont help you will be better off putting on a new one, Edited December 12, 2012 by tomwh1971
chevyaddict83 39 #9 Posted December 12, 2012 I hit it with wd40, its all I had on me. Im gonna grab some pb blaster tomorrow Sent from my 416-
Kevbo 80 #10 Posted December 13, 2012 PB blaser is some good stuff. It should penetrate any corrosion on that choke...just keep moving it back and forth as you spray :)
clemedc 29 #11 Posted December 13, 2012 If it doesnt get free with the PB Blaster try to remove it and submerge it in diesel fuel for a few days. Clem
chevyaddict83 39 #12 Posted December 13, 2012 Thanks clem. Im gonna spray it today with pb. If that doesn't cut it, diesel it is. With only 80 $ invested, including the cost (0 $) if I have to buy a new cable, it will be ok. Sent from my 416-
