K-181 rebuild question

Recommended Posts

gamaemry305

Today I dismantled a Kohler K-181 with a broken connectiong rod. Upon inspection the bore looks good but there is a piece of lower bore broken off. Do you think I can clean that area up and rebuild since its the very bottom of the bore. Or is the block toast!

Make sure there aren't any stuck pieces that could come out at a later time.

Use a stone on a die grinder or Dremel, etc. to smooth and blend the rough edge at the bottom of the cylinder, then lightly chamfer the corner so there's no danger of the piston skirt catching.

It's really no different than the procedure used to clearance the bottom of a cylinder when installing a stroker crankshaft, except yours was a surprise vs. being intentional and controlled. :thumbs2:

I'm with TT on this, his is usually the best advice.

I got one running now that looked a lot like this

and I couldn't begin to tell you which one it is.

What they all said ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

From the picture it looks like you got lucky! Every Kohler I have seen with a broken rod has punched the side of the block as well and either cracked it or put a window in it.

Another thing to check I've heard on the small Kohlers the cam gets broken, you may want to pull it to see.

Thank you all for the replies. In trying to figure out why the connecting rod broke in this case, this is what I have found so far. Scored journal on drive shaft. That tiny spring wire on the centrifical weights was unhooked from weight edges. Possibly from impact from connecting rod.

Could someone explain to me the principal of the weights?

Both weights move freely. But the largest one, which seems to pivot on a sliding pivot point, does not slide along that pivot point. Which seems to limit its movement.

Thank you for your help, Gary

The weights are the automatic compression release - or ACR.

Information and explanation of operation is in section 9 of the TP-2379 Kohler service manual

Thank you TT. I found it and read up on the ACR. I hope to find a machine shop to get some measurements and their opinion on if it needs any machine work.

I have a WH 300 series with a Kohler Magnum 10 engine and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the choke cable and linkage set so it will work. The numbers on the engine label  are worn off the, so I cannot give anyone that information. Does anyone have a picture or can you head me in the right direction.

My arm for the linkage assembly is set at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock if that helps. There seems to be several different linkage rods for this engine.

      Thanks

      Hey all!

Replacing the drive belt on my 252-h. Anyone know the torque specification for the center screw when I put this pto clutch back on? I know it was on there tight it took a minute for the impact to break it loose. Thanks!

Hey all. I have a Electro 12 with a factory belly blade. It runs* and drives. I had used it to grade my driveway the last 6 yrs. Having moved I'm looking at my options on storing it or selling it. Frankly I have no idea what it is worth. I watched "ISaveTractors" video on 5 things to do with a new to you wheel horse/12hp kohler. (When i got it 6yrs ago) And went thru and did the adjustments and replaced the parts mentioned. It has been a good strong tractor for me until around July of this year. (2023)
*Around July it started dying after running 20-30min. I replaced the carb (Chinese Amazon purchase) with one from isavetractors web site. That seemed to help it idle smoother(the old carbs jets wouldnt adjust), but it still dies at around 20-30min.
      So I've got 2 questions.
      1. What is it worth? (As-Is) and
      2. What do I need to do to fix it?
      Thanks yall!
