3 digit model designations

Recommended Posts

wp205a

Some of you know I have an 854. 8 hp, 1964 model. I've been looking around and saw a 633, (a nice tractor too). My newbie question of the day is, what does the middle number designate? Been wondering for awhile. Ridicule will not bother me.

From page 54 of "Straight from the Horses Mouth . . .the Wheel Horse Story" first edition, by Mike Martino", *

For the 1960's Wheel Horse models, for the center number:

0 = manual start

5 = Electric Start

6 = six speed

7 = Wheel-a-Matic, ( as always there were exceptions, like the 633 and Lawn Ranger models ).

+

And as you know; the first number was horsepower and the last number was for the year.

* And remember, the new 3rd Edition should be out and available next June, probably at the big Wheel Horse show in Pennsylvania, June. 21, 22.

New myself and from what gather from information her that middle digit appears to deal with starter type, but don't really know for certain.

Thanks so much and the 633 has a recoil starter in lieu of a manual, which I guess is a wrap the rope around? This won't keep me awake tonight! :ychain:

The recoil starter is the manual start

the 701,702 and 633 are the exceptions to the rule of the early sixties round hoods models 400 ,550,401,551,502,552,753,653,603,854,704,604,654,754

all follow the rules for the three numbers

Not all of the 633 had that style recoil. The earlier tractors had a Fairbanks Morse recoil similar to the recoil used on some clintons on the RJ35s, but again several of them broke and they were replaced just like the Tillson carbs were replaced with the Carter carbs.

The 633 was the kohler powered pull start, the 603 was the tecumseh powered pull start, there are 2 other odd tractors, the 1045 and 1046, what does the 4 stand for both are elect start stick shifts?, those 2 are not round hoods, also the 867 1067 1267 the 6 stands for the new that year 6 speed trans "1967", in 1968 they started naming the tractors and dropped the number system.
