D series snow thrower

I have a new to me snow thrower for the 180. There is a small gearbox at the drive pulley to change the rotation 90^o. I wanted to check to see if it needed gear oil but when I opened the fill hole it was full of grease instead of oil. Which is correct??

I thought I was going to be able to answer your question as I pulled out my binder with my manuals but my snow thrower manuals say nothing as to what fluid goes into the gear box?

I would say gear lube but thats only a guess.

Will be watching this post as I also will be working on my snow thrower before to long.

I got an answer for this from a reliable source (Tap53) and the box is filled with grease. Tim suggests synthetic because of the cold working conditions. I hope this helps.

Interesting. I would have guessed oil as well. Good info to have for the d thrower I hope to have some day.

The 1973-74 manual for the 6-7451 on page 5 says to fill the gearbox with all purpose grease.

Mine is full of grease, When I opened it to check I used a a wooden paint stirrer to stir the grease and spread it over the gears....just to be sure. But it is a thick grease, not gear lub.

Yes it is regular grease.
