Painting Cooling Fins Kohler K Series.

Found a 16 horse k series locally and found the cooling fins were falling apart and razor thin. I decided to pass on it.

So with that in mind, can I paint my k series engine fins without causing a cooling problem. Mine are starting to rust but have not flaked yet.

I prefer not to paint cooling fins or cyl heads as these are air cooled engines obviously and they need all the help they can get.

Not sure if you can easily get a product called RUST CHECK in the RED can (not green...its waxy). its the same stuff they use for rust proofing your car etc.The red stuff is thin and creeps all over the place. I've been using it for years on EVERYTHING i own, it works awesome. You should be able to get it at hardware stores etc, it is in aerosol cans

I have had good luck using Duplicolor engine enamel, it has ceramic in it to help with heat transfer and durability, biggest problem is cleaning the engine good enough to get rid of the rust and grease.

I just spray with a shaker can, heat paint from auto parts store. Clean it up, light sanding, and spray it. Two light coats.

I am interested in this but have a question on how ceramic would help with heat transfer. Ceramic usually is an insulator to keep heat in, and not for transferring heat. I know my headers I put on my Mx-5 are ceramic coated, but this acts as an insulator to keep heat in the header and out of the engine bay. I am concerned that you are actually keeping heat in your engine. Thoughts?

You know now that I think about it you may be right about the ceramic, but I have had no problem with my 655 with h60 tecumseh, although I do not paint my heads, I like the bare aluminum look on those

I usually paint mine. I use VHT engine enamel.

The first is the K301 in my B-80, the second is the 1952 Briggs 9FB in my sons Bantam, and the third is a 1953 Briggs Model N.

I like the bare aluminum look too.

I will check out some other paints at Advance auto later this week.
