Specifically, my truck broke down in front of the house and I need to get my camper parked. The tow will be all of 150 feet!

Karl,

I was told my truck has a 5th wheel however I have never tired to use it before? It is burried under the bedliner. If you know how to use it I am willing to help. Give me a call.

Ended up calling the local towing company. The owner of the company has a dually which they used to put the camper in the parking spot. The trusty Jeep (XJ) then pulled the truck up the driveway so both are parked where they belong.

If anyone has an Autoengunity scan tool with the Ford bundle who is looking for something to do this weekend I have some ideas ;)

It's a 6.0L Ford Diesel B) A couple of years ago the truck was having some cold start problems, so I took it to the dealer to have the computers reflashed. This latest strategy has what is called induction heating for the injectors. Basically it operates the injector spool valve to warm up the oil inside and prevent cold start stiction issues. The unfortunate downside of this is it puts a tremendous amount of strain on the trucks FICM (Fuel Injector Control Module). I have performed some tests on the FICM with a multimeter checking for the proper voltage (48V) and I am getting 23V during some of the tests which are positive signs that the FICM needs to be repaired.

I've contacted a company who specializes in FICM repair and hopefully will get a replacement early in the week (comes from Iowa). I am hoping that the FICM is the entire issue as it is also showing signs of high pressure oil leaks which is more money to fix. Good news is that I'm stupid enough to do all the work myself saving a ton on labor :rolleyes:

Before leaving I thought that I had an injector going, but it's looking like it's the FICM instead. Thankfully for companies like ficmrepair.com for repairing these things instead of new (way too much money).

While the FICM was bad, the new one allowed the truck to start, but it is no where near running well. (depression sets in.....)

Going to test fuel pressure today, after that it goes to Ford to get fixed. Anyone have a flatbed big enough for an F250?

Well, it's off to the dealer to get checked. I suppose that "technically" it's not Ford but International, since that's who makes the engine B) Hope it's just something dumb and simple.

How often do you change the fuel filter Carl? My recommendation is every other oil change or 10000 miles. Diesel fuel is the most dirtiest fuel on the market and I see bad filters all the time! Another issue with fords is oil level. If the oil level gets too low it will not feed the injectors as high pressure engine oil is what make the injectors work. It is known as the huwie pump and huwie injectors.On all fords, the first thing I check when one comes in for a no start is oil level! 1 out of 3 this is all that is wrong with the vehicle. It also could be injector seals that will cause the truck to actually burn the engine oil along with the diesel fuel. checking the fuel filter to see if it is dirty will tell you if the fuel is black you have bad injector seals. You said that the truck was running, but not wright. missing on one or two cylinders. this could have been your problem to start with and that took out the FICM . The issue I see a lot is valve cover gaskets and wiring harness connectors that go through the gasket and are known to burn out where they plug in. Dur-ring the summer months the glow plugs burn out, but the truck still starts fine and the higher amperage going through the remaining glow plugs burns out the connector in the gasket. the wires that drive the injectors are run right next to the glow plug wires and both get compromised when the connection fails. I hope that this info helps.

It's at the dealer now. I checked all I could check here without the scan tools. To avoid issues, the fuel filters were changes just prior to leaving (along with the oil) the replaced fuel filters had only 7,000 miles on them. I'm pretty good on the maintenance of the truck. Low pressure oil is great so the High pressure pump was getting oil. Now there certainly could be a problem with the HPOP, the 03's have 2 inherent weaknesses, one is a tube can rub through on the HPOP cover and the second is a plug can fall out of the HPOP and leak high pressure oil but both of these symptoms are usually no HOT starts, cold starts are usually fine and mine was the opposite. I do not have the scan tools to see what the high pressure oil numbers are (needs 500psi to start). Oil is fresh Mobile 1 Diesel, which is all I run in this beast because it's a HEUI engine.

My gut tells me that I either have multiple injector failure or the IPR is bad (hoping for the IPR). Everything else is good, new FICM, 55lbs + fuel pressure, low pressure oil, replaced the ICP sensor with a known working one even removed both fuel filters to check for junk and they're both really clean. The dealer where I brought it does a significant amount of truck work. I have spoken with the Tech there last year when I had the truck re-flashed and he's a really knowledgable guy who was impressed with how clean this 6.0 is. Worst part is that it doesn't leak or burn any oil or coolant which these things are famous for.

This did get me to re-register my little sports car and the kids are getting a kick riding with the t-roof off so it's kinda fun (except when the bill comes).

Actually on the 6.0 the HP oil pump is below the intake manifold and takes over 8 hours to replace. Injectors can be done under 2 hours. In my opinion, it's the worst case scenario (and expensive). So it looks like I had multiple concurrent failures. First the FICM which caused my cold no-starts in S.C and PA, then the High Pressure Oil pump killing it all together couple that with the brake line failure and this is the most expensive trip I have ever had! On the bright side, the new pump is updated and should last for a very long time, the FICM has been rebuilt with far better components, and the brake line is new so going and stopping should be good.
