Points saver or Points slayer?????

Come on motor heads I need some input!!!!

I have a newly acquired C-160. It runs well. Just needed some basic TLC. I've been reading up on Kirk's Engine's and Brian Miller's websites and ran across these two products. I'm really curious as to any success or failures anyone here has had using either product. I doubt this tractor will see more than 20 hours a year. but when it does go out it'll be pulling logs or blowing snow, and the occasional kiddy ride. Hence I want to increase its dependability any way I can.

I've seen multiple conversations favoring the points saver.

Also is there any benefit to a Bosch Coil vs. a stock Kohler/Delco?

And any opinions as to why to keep it original are valued as well.

No real benefit to running a Bosch coil on a stock engine. I have no experience with the point saver, but I will add that I've never had a problem with points on a Kohler. Clean them and gap them when they need it and they won't let you down.

I've never had them myself, but I've talked to guys who have, and they said you'll never have to gap, or replace your points again, when using the points saver. I haven't talked to anyone who used the points slayer.

I was looking at these lately, the Points Slayer looks interesting. I haven't used one, but I converted my IH Cub to electronic ignition and eliminated the points with a kit from Pertronix (but they don't make a kit for Kohler that I know of). It worked really well! I assume the Points Slayer is similar. The Pertronix kit was really easy to install too.

I have never had issues with points before. They are easy to clean and easy to set. Every tractor that I have seen with a points saver or mag conversions and they look hacked up. extra wires and extra things to go wrong! Points are the most simple way to make a spark for a combustion engine and they are the most easy to fix!

I agree with this totally, points are especially easy to set on Kohlers. You can replace and reset the points on a Kohler in a hundredth the amount of time it will take you to troubleshoot any electronic or magneto ignition system difficulty. As long as your condenser is good, the points should last a long while too.

As of 6pm we have a rebuilt carb, new points, and new seals on the fuel pump, breather, and cam gear cover. It purrs really nice now!!!!

I use a Point Saver along with the Dual Super coil from Kirk's on my C-175 puller. It's a great combination and allows for easy timing changes if you ever want to advance the timing slightly..

That's fine for a engine that is built up and has some mods done to it and I would recommend it for that. But for a stock engine in a stock tractor not pulling, there's nothing better then the stock points for simplicity of repairs and no benefit from a larger coil.

:) I installed David Kirks points saver on my K321 5 yrs ago and have not touched the points since. Since the condenser is removed with this system, one less thing to worry about. :flags-usa:

I installed the points saver on my K301 several years ago and have not touched the points, the points still look new and with the points saver it is so easy to set the timing dead on. I have bought several items from David Kirk over the years and he is as honest as they come. If he tells you something you can count on it. :twocents-02cents:
