Sparky-(Admin) 23,082 #1 Posted June 30, 2012 Any kayakers on here? I picked up a used one at the end of the season last year and only got it out once before winter. Today I took it out up in Massachusetts near my camp. Talk about a good arm workout! Perfect weather temp wise but a little breezy, ok if its behind you but if its blowing in yer face you need to paddle much harder with no breaks or you end up drifting backwards. But its nice to get out on the water and just paddle along, real quiet and peacefull. This lake is on both sides of a road and you can get thru to the other side by a tunnel. It was my first time on this lake, nice place to explore. Here a couple pics. I didnt have my camera, only my cell so the quality is not so great.

Rollerman 290 #4 Posted June 30, 2012 Looks like fun Mike. What are the details on the boat? Had a Wilderness Systems sit on top & enjoyed it...sold it though about 5 years ago for lack of time & use. Keeping my eye out for another one though.
KC9KAS 4,744 #5 Posted June 30, 2012 I don't like Kayaking, but do enjoy a canoe trip. Looks and sounds like you had a good time.
Sparky-(Admin) 23,082 #6 Posted June 30, 2012 What are the details on the boat? Its a Trophy Future Beach 126. Its the kind you sit in. Pretty comfy with the padded backrest. Has a couple rod holders and two waterproof compartments. Mike.............
rmaynard 16,287 #7 Posted June 30, 2012 My wife and I have a trip to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons planned for this September. Part of the trip includes either a kayak or whitewater rafting trip on the Snake River. I guess that I have to decide which death is going to be less painful...or maybe I should just opt for the scenic river float.
CRE1992 135 #8 Posted June 30, 2012 My mom kayaks when she can, I have 2 kayaks and used to go often, but now finding time to kayak is far and in between.
AMC RULES 37,195 #9 Posted July 1, 2012 Me and the Mrs. and our local kayak club on a moonlight cruise of the mighty Hudson river. When traffic is heavy...maybe a 2 minute drive from our front door. We're out there a lot. Our phones too, take the crappiest picts. :)
neil 2,410 #10 Posted July 1, 2012 We have two Wilderness sit on top Tarpen Kayaks as we live 20 yards from a canal and the is a small pond the other side of us we also have taken them to the ocean which is only a few short miles from where we live. I have only taken them out once this year so far to clear old fishing line from the island on the pond and also clear rubbish left by people fishing etc im looking forward to taking them out again soon when this darn British weather starts to improve picture of the pond just next to my house

So do you always paddle downstream to a predetermined pick-up point? Or do you fight the current and head upriver? I left the pond I was in and got into a small river (50' wide) but was going against the current which wasn't so much fun. If I stopped a second to catch my breath I was soon drifting backwards. nylyon-(Admin) 7,878 #13 Posted July 1, 2012 I used to canoe down the Delaware river and had often thought about kayaking. I always found canoeing to be very relaxing.
AMC RULES 37,195 #14 Posted July 1, 2012 Actually, most people don't realize that the Hudson River has tide cycles because it connects to the Atlantic Ocean, and its conditions can change instantly. Like glass one minute and a two foot chop the next. The river is over a a mile wide here near the Hamilton-Fish Bridge...so, it's not necessarily going with the current that can be a real challenge, but cutting across it Mike. Remember too, all this is done while sharing the main channel of the river with boat, and barge traffic which always has the right of way. It's really hard to imagine just how fast those barges can sneak up on you, when you're out there in a little kayak. I think the most fun I've ever had was crossing the Hudson while towing the wife in the high winds that popped up, and a two foot chop. We were last to leave Bannerman's Island that night, and first to arrive on shore. What an awesome "hero" kiss I received for my hard work that night. :auto-checkeredflag:
IthacaJeff 151 #15 Posted July 1, 2012 Mike: Back in college in MA I joined the university outdoor club one summer to learn to flatwater kayak, then we got on the river. Went to CT, a river in the northwest corner of the state, cannot remember the name. Anyway, I never did get the hang of the eskimo roll, and on one of my "turn turtles", rushing down the river upside down, I smacked my head on a rock. Thank goodness for the helmet, or who knows what could have happened. . . .scary to think about it. Jeff
