70mph straight line winds take down barn

Recommended Posts

My buddy Tom's neighbor had his barn blown apart last weekend from a storm that produced 70mph straight line winds last sunday morning. So I spent Memorial day helping him clean up his yard. Here are some pictures about 1 hour after it happened.

all these pics are from atop Toms brick building, the large piece in the middle of his driveway took out the south west top 2 rows of bricks of his building.

in this pic you can see Kevin, Toms neighbor atop his loft that he built in this barn last summer. He was trying to save this 80 year old barn and double its storage space. he spent over $20,000 so far to fix it up and was planning on all new steel siding and steel roof this year. Know its a total loss

Kevin's barn is a total loss. The first pics above you can see the two white trucks on the right, that was the north wall that is gone. The entire roof on the side I was taking pics of is not attached to anything. He had a specialist come in from the other side of the state, and he said that it would cost way to much to fix compared to a new pole barn twice its size.

Glad no one was hurt. That's amazing to have it take the roof off in that large of a piece. Hope his insurance can help him recover his loss.

We had 90 MPH straight line winds thru here last week. It just missed me. There are lots of barns less than a mile south from me all flat and the village just east of me got hit real hard.

Very surprisingly there was only around $3000 in damage to the contents of the barn. It was full of cars, trucks, tractors and trailers. The barn was insured for $60,000, and he is hopping to get that to rebuild a new one.

Wow, it is amazing what a strong wind can do in the right (or wrong) scenario.

On the bright side... look at all that nice aged lumber! Get a cat's paw and get to stacking! Some old barn board brings a nice price by the linear foot if you have a market for it in your area.

Amazing pictures Scott...glad no one was hurt. Jason is right about the barn wood, that stuff is worth it's weight, it just takes time to clean it. :)

As for most of the wood was burnt as they needed to get the mess cleaned up. most was twisted and broken. The rest of the barn they plan on salvaging as much as possible.
