Commando 8 Progress...seriously?

Recommended Posts

rmaynard

It's been a long couple of months since I picked up my Commando 8 (just before Christmas). With all good intentions, I thought I would have a complete restoration done by the end of April. But, as things would have it, family, work, and everything else got in the way.

Well, here it is April 20th. The Wheel Horse show is only 62 days away, and here is my progress.

I am still determined to have it ready for the show.

Seriously.

Actually it is a little further along. The wheels have been sand blasted and powder coated, and the engine is ready for covers.

You find front tires yet Bob?

Not yet. I have a few leads though on some original 16 x 5.50's in decent shape, but as of now, I am still tireless.

Would be good to see it when it's back on 'All 4S' Bob :wwp: , or are you keeping this one under wraps 'til it's finished? .

I am not going to document it like the previous ones, but I will post updates at appropriate intervals. However, with only 60 days till showtime, there may be very few updates.

As of last night, everything but the hood went to the sand blaster. Should have it all back by Sunday. The hood did not go since it is a NOS one. Just needs to have a couple of dings repaired, then it will be painted with everything else. Started working on the transmission last night and found that the threads where the shifter set screw goes are pretty messed up. I posted another thread about that this morning.

That's it for now. More updates as they become available.

Transmission is fixed. Everything is back from the sand blaster. Did some body work to the fender pan, hood stand/tool box and belt guard. Should be getting a coat of epoxy primer on Saturday, weather permitting. Might even have some pictures.

Can't let you drool all over my keyboard, so here's a couple of pics.

Most of the parts have been sand blasted and a little body work has been done on the pan

Since the axle holes were really worn, and the spindles were wobbling, I reamed out the holes and inserted bronze bushings

post-2221-0-88902500-1336762192_thumb.jp

The shifter set screw hole had damaged threads, so a heli-coil was inserted.

The NOS hood is sitting patiently in my basement, waiting to be united with the rest of the tractor.

That's it for now. More to follow.

Hate to bother you when your down to the wire but, did you find any front tires yet? If not I've got a decent set I can get to you. Let me know.

Dave
