It's just one thing after another

Well, I've done lots of work getting, and keeping, my D-200 running. After a mild winter I removed the snow thrower and cleaned it up some. Now I find the battery is not charging. It was fine all winter; started every time but now the battery is dead. After a jump start it run fine but the amp meter shows a big fat ZERO. I put a battery/charging system meter on it and find nothing coming to the battery. Before I dig in to find the problem I though I'd tap this pool of knowledge and experience to see if there might be a most common or 'the usual' problem. The battery is several years old so it might be the problem. But I figure the meter should show something even if the battery isn't holding the charge. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Kevin

First thing I would do is to check all the wires to make sure there isn't a loose one. After rebuilding my engine I wasn't getting a good charge and it turned out to be a loose connection on the regulator/rectifier. I am far from an electrical guru but that solved my problem :confusion-shrug:

Good advice Paul. That was my first thought too. I plan to get into that next chance I get. What I hate about electrical issues is that you cannot 'see' anything working or not working. Mechanical problems often can be seen, electricity is invisible.......except when the spark bites ya!

Check and make sure the regulator has a good ground. Check the Ac voltage from the stator leads. If you don't have over 30v at full throttle then test the stator per the manual. if you have 30 volts or more get a new regulator

Ok, I uncovered the D yesterday and started to check the connections on the voltage regulator.........but couldn't find it! I believe it's under the instrument panel mounted on the steel plate on the left side. That means I'll have to disassemble a lot of sheet metal just to get to it. I figure over an hour just so I can touch it with my hand. I might be able to reach it from below, on my back under the tractor (good thing I don't have the mower deck installed). Does anyone else out there have a suggestion? Anyone have to deal with the regulator on a D?

Thanks,

KT

Left side near the front. It is mounted by the two shiny hex nuts you can see in the picture. If you have a skinny hand you can reach between the engine and the panel. If I recall it was not a fun project and something seemed to make access from underneath difficult...maybe my loader frame i do not recall.

Thanks Paul. Yeah, I figured that was it. I can feel it with the tips of my fingers but that's about it. I'll have to move the tractor into the garage to get under it. I may also be able to get to it if I remove the battery and battery tray but who knows. I'm finding that many things on this tractor are hard to get to.

But another problem has developed......I'm coming down with a nasty cold. Dat-burn-it! My head feels like a football after a playoff game. Guess the D will have to wait a couple days now.

I have my 25A fuse blowing every time I put a new one in the slot. The old one was burnt up when I got the tractor put this year. It sat for a year with a dead battery. I stopped using it as much because the transmission is clattering pretty bad when taking off on second or higher. I had to replace the clutch belt a few years ago and couldn't get an OEM. Not sure what is the problem there that's another issue though.

I have checked the wiring and patched the worn spots where it could be grounding out. The fuse blows as soon as there is power to the system with the ignition off. I'm at a loss of what to check for at this point. Any input from someone who has had this issue would be appreciated. I'm not sure what these units are in the photos but do not know how to test them for a failure. They are directly in loop with the battery and the ignition loom looks to run into that 25A fuse.

I was looking around on ebay and noticed that hydraulic actuators from John Deere 312, 317, etc models appear to be Identical to a Gt14 or d series lift cylinder. My question is would a new cylinder from ebay be able to replace one that is on a gt14 or d series?

Images below of cylinders to show similaritys.

My friction disc in gone on my clutch.  I saw the old post about making a new friction disc, so I'm not concerned about that.
I managed to remove the front clutch plate and double v-belt pulley.  But I can't separate the two.  When I took the assembly off the spiraloc washer popped off on its own.  I HAVE READ THE MANUALS.
So I should be able to just remove the pulley from the front clutch and continue with step 4.  The v-belt pulley is loose as all hell and flops around like a dead fish.  It seems to be hung up on a ring or bearing race.
So my thoughts are grab a BFH or sparky the blue tip wrench.
Is there an unpublished step 3.5, or some trick?

      Hey all,

My '74 D180 has a lot of trouble pushing snow.  Weighted tires, but nothing else at this time.  I've found it gets stuck frequently and only one wheel spins.  Do these tractors not have a limited slip/locker arrangement?  How does everyone manage with the infamous one wheel peel?

Hey all, I need to install a drive belt on my 75 D180 for my snowblower.  I've looked through a bunch of D-series owner's manuals, and none seem to mention replacement procedure.  The PTO pulley is fixed, save for engaging the PTO and there is minimal movement at the snowthrower pulley. There's no idler or tensioner as far as I can tell.  Do I have to remove the PTO pulley?  That seems to be a required service item.
Same question for my 80 D200 as well really.

      Using the recommended 4L490W belt.

      Thanks
