Recommended Posts

I have a 1960 suburban 400 and cant get the recoil to grab good, the pawls look great &retract properly & the cup is smooth with a little sign of wear, is there an updated starter cup maybe with teeth or grooves that will work, if so I'll need pt#, thanks Dave.

I had a similar problem with mine a few years ago. I took it completely apart, cleaned it and put it back together. Worked fine ever since. No grease, oil, WD-40 or anything. It should be dry, and everything will move freely. Grease/oil will only make it slip again.

I agree, clean it up good. If it has fairbanks I do put a little touch of grease where the paws slide on the housing, NOT, on the ends where they make contact with the cup.

I solved the slipping issue with the recoil !!!!! upon very close examination I noticed the pawls were slightly rounded, so I took them off and ground the ''back-side'' lightly until the rounded edge dissappeared and became sharp again. grabs AWESOME . probably better than factory!!!!!
