Recommended Posts

Under Seat Gas Tank!! Removing old shut of valve and installing a new one.

Here is my way of doing it.

First I heat up the area around the valve with a Hair Dryer I used the hi setting

Hair Dryer

Next picture shows gas tank in vice.

I heat up around the valve to soften the plastic then I pull on gas tank and here are the results.

Next I cleaned the tank up a little bit and smeared petrolum jelly on the hole in the tank also on grommet

Installed grommet

Then The Shutoff Valve

This is my third one, takes about a half hour to do it this way. You have to be careful after 30 or so years the plastic get brittle.

Hope this helps some one that needs to do one.

:text-goodpost: The only thing I'll add is make sure the tank is clear & not a potential source of fumes, hairdryers can make a potential ignition source.

I was worried when i took mine apart. I washed the tank with hot soapy water in the kitchen (the wife was real happy with that)

lubed everything up and slipped together, I used the same valve and took off the screen, it was all rusted. I figured I would add an in line filter anyway.

I put gas in it for a while, and lucked out, no leaks!
