Mykol610 2 #1 Posted February 4, 2012 I know of a guy that has an old hood ornament I was thinking of using for my David Bradley this summer. THe only problem is that it's moderately pitted. I was wondering if anyone knows of any ways to fix it for inexpensive enough before I would repaint it. It's a larger hood ornament from a 51 Rocket?? I'm not 100% sure but I think that's what he said. I'd like to get it fixed up for cheap cause I can get the hood ornament for a good price. I think it would look nice on the Bradley. But to fix the pitting, the only thing I can think is to sand it down all over to get rid of the pitting. Any ideas would be great. or would it not really be even worthwhile? Unfortunately I don't have pics but could post some (not very good) one's if needed. The pics the guy has posted aren't that good in showing how the pitting is. tbbahner 28 #2 Posted February 4, 2012 I assume its chrome. If its rusty, you can try rubbing it with "Bar Keepers Friend". Its great stuff, get the powder, comes in a can like Comet but doesn't scratch the surface. Put it on a wet rag to make a paste and rub the rusty pits away. . I have also tried the aluminum foil method. Wet the foil and chrome and rub the foil over it. Careful though, it will leave scratches on the chrome. I just did the rusty bumpers on an old '82 motor home and brought the shine back great. Preferred BKF method.
Mykol610 2 #3 Posted February 4, 2012 It didn't look like chrome. Unless it was extremely worn. It was dark like steel or aluminum (I almost want to say aluminum cause it's not rusty...). I could feel this pitting on it. It was pretty deep. Almost like someone shot it with really small BBs. Here's a few pics from the Craigslist ad. It's dark and seems worn but not rusty. rmaynard 16,432 #4 Posted February 4, 2012 That hood ornament was chrome plated pot metal. It doesn't really rust, but it does corrode and pit when the chrome starts to degrade from weather. If you want to get it back to new looking, you will have to have it bead-blasted and re-chromed. Otherwise, a good sanding and some paint will freshen it up
