D Series Gas Tank

Recommended Posts

Hodge71

Hey guys,

I purchased a Por 15 kit to seal my gas tank from all the leaks it has in the seams and the bottom. While I was doing the cleaning process yesterday I noticed that someone drilled a 1/8" hole in the filler neck area of the tank. Is this done at the factory or did someone drill this hole for some reason? I'd like to seal the hole, as the tank leaks from there when it go up hills and the fuel sloshes around. I dont want to ruin my new paint job and my understanding was they had a vented gas cap to allow for the vapors to expand and contract in the sun. Any ideas? I'd like to weld it closed if I can today.

Welding petrol (gas)! tanks is only for the brave, why not fit a small nut and bolt or rivet before sealing it?

I will weld it without a problem The tank has been washed out 3 times with soap and water, once with Por 15 Marine Clean and 1 time with Por 15 metal prep acid. There is absolutely no chance that this thing is going to have any fuel residue in it to cause a problem. The only thing it has in it is a bunch of holes. It'd make a better seive than a gas tank. But that will all change within the hour.....

Seal the hole. It does not belong there. A properly vented fuel cap with gauge will work just fine.

Weld it up, I love the POR 15 kit, I have used it on a few tanks, works great.

This is off topic but related to the fix being used

Is the Por 15 kit good for "locking" debri in place to the sides of the tank? -- I have a gas tank that was taken off, sealed, and then cleaned -- Even with the cleaning there is "crap" floating around in the gas tank plugging up the carburator -- This is on an old farm tractor

If you use the entire kit with all the cleaners and metal prep from a place like KB or POR-15 it will take all the crud out of the tank. I wouldn't try sealing over any loose "crap", it won't hold and you'll have both "crap" and sealer plugging the carb.

Ok guys here the pics that were requested and hopefully answers to some of the questions asked. I cleaned the inside of my tank by first putting about 1 foot of chain into the tank throught the fill hole. I then strapped it to my 416 tire with a few bungee cords and drove around for awhile to loosen all the rust in it. As you might remember my fuel looked like chocolate milk when this whole process started.

After doing the chain thing I followed Por 15 instructions and rinsed the tank with soapy water and the adding the Por 15 Marine clean and sloshing the tank all over for about 15 minutes and then leaving it sit on each side for 20 minutes to allow it to dissolve the varnish and crud from the gas.

After that it gets rinsed well and the whole process starts over again with Por 15 metal prep acid 20 minutes of sloshing and then sitting on each side of the tank for 30 minutes. This process is where the rust inside is all dissolved and it became quite obvious to me at this time that I owned a seive...not a gas tank. Almost 2 hours later, dumped acid and washed with water til clear and no longer bubbly. I couldnt believe how the inside of my tank looked. It was absolutely rust free and silver metal inside. It needs to dry completely or the sealer will not stick. I accomplished this by having my ceramic heater blowing on the outside and my heat gun blowing hot air into the tank thropugh the fill for 24 hours straight.

After that the Por 15 sealer gets mixed thoruoghly and dumped in throught the fill neckand gas cap put on. Slow roll the tank to thoroughly coat everything I also let it sit on each side for aout 10 minutes to be sure all seams were covered. Then you stand the tank straight with the petcock hole in the bottom, I had a wooden dowel in the hole to keep the sealer inside. I pulled the dowel out and drained the remaining sealer into the container it came in. Heres the pics of the tank inside now

Dave As far as your tank...there is hope!!! The first thing I would do is get the Por 15 kit specifically made for tanks that had an inferior sealer used. It has a vicious liquid stripper included to dissolve the old coating and then everything to seal it the right way. Its called the "Heavy Duty Motorcycle Tank Repair Kit" and sells for $48.25 on their website.

As for me, you can see its primed, now starts the sanding process. Hopefully the hi build primer and tons of sanding will fill all the pits on the outside of this thing and get me a smooth surface to paint.

Looks good, just let the sealer dry a week or so, the puddles will not cure like the rest, and gas will eat it, but when dry it's a rock.

Kelly its going to MUCH longer than a week til this thing has gas in it. And Pete thanks man. I started a thread under D series restoration to cover progress on the whole tractor. It wasnt originally my plan but with the hydro pump and motor being bad and so many other problems I'm deaIing with on it I decided to rip it down while theyre at the doctors office getting rebuilt
