squonk 39,113 #1 Posted September 19, 2011 My 704 deck was loud. Not the normal gear noise. It sounded like Woody Woodpecker on a metal roof. The cross shaft was worn in the bearing race contact area causing the shaft to move from side to side banging the gears. A new shaft from Red Squares' No.1 machinist, buckrancher and it back to normal gear noise.I took pics of the entire process but some got deleted. My question is: What's the best grease to use. I plan on painting the deck and it will see very limited use but I don't want the grease to get all runny and get all over new paint. I tried a synthetic wheel bearing grade grease once and once it got warm it seeped and blew out of the gear covers. :thumbs2:
