Buzz 502 #1 Posted September 18, 2011 My son Ron made Navy Chief yesterday. He's in the Navy Reserve out of Newport RI but has been on active duty for the past 15 months in Djibouti Africa. He's in Naval Intelligence Special Operations. While in Djibouti he earned the Navy Expeditionary Warfare Pin. In 2008 he was attached to the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman battle group although he spent almost no time on the ship, being stationed at Al Udied air base in Quatar. They would develop intelligence then fly out to the carrier for a briefing. As he said all of the satellites, drones, aerial photography, and other surveillance were okay but sometimes you had to put boots on the ground to get the real picture. On one of the "boots on the ground" excursions he walked away from a helicopter crash, on another one a building blew up when they were inside. A few dings, dents, and small cuts and he was good as new. I asked if he was getting a Purple Heart for them and he just laughed and said they called them "John Kerrys" and wouldn't take them if offered. It's a whole different Navy that the one I was in. He lives in the Harrisburg PA area and has visited the Wheel Horse Show several times. I'm sure some of you have met him. Needless to say we are all proud of him. Shame on me for not knowing as my whole family has been in the military at one point. I would like to enlist in the Navy AFTER I graduate from my college and then go through OCS . I would of enlisted after high school, but my mother would of killed me because I am her only child. ANYWAYS hats off to you and your son for making the country a safer and better place :USA:

hm12460 53 #16 Posted September 20, 2011 Buzz, your son sounds like a fine young man. You must have done a good job raising him. Please tell him his country thanks him for his service. I can remember when i thought a Navy Chief was an "old timer" The years sure do go by fast don't they?
Buzz 502 #17 Posted September 20, 2011 trading in his blue dungarees for khakis. Dungarees? You're giving you age away. Here's what todays sailors wear....... at least the ones in the Middle East or Horn of Africa Commands. Most shipboard sailors wear blue camouflage coveralls. I guess that makes them easier to find if they fall overboard.......
Buzz 502 #18 Posted September 20, 2011 I can remember when i thought a Navy Chief was an "old timer" The years sure do go by fast don't they? He is kind of an old timer, he'll be 44 in November. He enlisted after 9-11, his college roomate and several other friends died when the towers came down. He was 35, too old to enlist as an officer. He has a successful career and everytime he gets called up to active duty he walks away from a six figure income to having to live on navy pay. But as he says, we are at war. CasualObserver 3,411 #22 Posted September 21, 2011 Congratulate and thank him for me too. Have they changed the age limits? When I was an active duty Marine you couldn't enlist after age 28? (Perhaps it just different for the other branches?) It takes a lot of courage and commitment to take on that role and duty at 35. Pride, Duty and Patriotism seems like dying traits in today's culture. I know you're proud, and you should be. Thanks for sharing.
