Kelly 1,033 #2 Posted September 6, 2011 I'm setting here with the kids waiting for the bus, Ryan is going in to 6th grade, Hunter is going in to 11th grade, and for helping with home work, I've never seen or done most of the stuff they are doing.
rmaynard 16,289 #3 Posted September 6, 2011 Yes, they do grow up fast. Before long you will be sitting at their graduation. But what amazes me is how schools have changed. School started more than a week ago here. When I went to school (ancient history), we didn't start until after labor day. The Maryland State Fair ended on Labor Day, and that signaled that the next week day was school. Elementary school was 1st through 6th grade, (there was no kindergarten), junior high was 7th & 8th, and high school was 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th. You went to school 180 days with a week off at Christmas, and Easter plus a couple of "professional" days. We didn't close for snow unless there was at least 3" on the ground. Teachers were expected to be respected, and if you were bad, you were suspended. If you were suspended three times you were expelled. My, how times have changed. Oh well, I guess it's all for the better? Good luck to all the little ones going back to school.
whfan74 2,071 #4 Posted September 6, 2011 I have been back to school for 3 weeks. It has been another great start to the school year and the kids seem eager to work hard. I really enjoy my job, which I feel is a huge bonus. Plus, there are never two days the same! It was an extra special start to the school year as my daughter started kindergarten. It is really hard to believe that she is here at school with me and my wife (teacher as well) for the next 7 years. I am trying to enjoy it while it lasts.......I know she will be walking across the big stage receiving a diploma before I know it.
zieg72 209 #5 Posted September 6, 2011 Yes time flies, moved back to Indiana in 1996 when my oldest was starting kindergarten that fall, now he has been in college for a while now and my youngest is a Senior... Really don't know where the time went.
stevasaurus 23,274 #6 Posted September 6, 2011 Talk about times changing...all the grades were together in a one room school house...had to do the chores first...hitch up the horse and ride 3 miles to school...and yes...it was up hill both ways. Snow days??? HA HA Be careful driving out there now...some of those young ones will be waiting for the bus in the dark. :thumbs2:
CasualObserver 3,411 #7 Posted September 6, 2011 we didn't start until after labor day. The Maryland State Fair ended on Labor Day, and that signaled that the next week day was school. We didn't close for snow unless there was at least 3" on the ground. We at least still have these two things around here! Last day of the state fair is always Labor Day. First day of school today, I saw lots of parents with cameras waiting with their kids in driveways this morning. And if they closed school here for less than three inches, the kids wouldn't go to school most of the winter!
IthacaJeff 151 #8 Posted September 6, 2011 It is indeed a new year, and two of my boys are in public school for the first time after being homeschooled up through 6th & 7th grades. My oldest is a senior in HS, and waivers between the excitement of being the top dog and the anxiety that comes with the "now or never" importance of grades and athletic accomplishments to getting into college. My three youngest -- all daughters -- are still being schooled at home. Without the two boys at home to help my wife with the schooling (they are good buffers between the girls), it'll be an interesting year for sure!
Coadster32 793 #9 Posted September 6, 2011 Yeah, my wife and I dropped our daughter off for her first day of kindergarden today. My daughter was a trooper. My wife cried, so I took her out to breakfast, then went back to work. Two more years, and my son will be starting school as well.
mavfreak 11 #10 Posted September 6, 2011 for my wife and I, back to school is sad and a relief. By the time the middle of august gets here our girls are bored and driving us nuts. The sad part is that they are one year older.
