mattd860 162 #1 Posted August 26, 2011 My wife is very sick and on bed rest connected to an IV 24/7. With the impending hurricane I decided it's best to get a generator. So I found a Generac 6500w (8500 watt max) generator for sale in my town for a whopping $250 bucks. It hadn't been run in years but after I soaked the carb in cleaner and free'd up the float bowl needle it runs great and produces 120 & 240 volts. Also it only has 4.8 hours on it and yes, the hour meeter works!!!! For some reason it will only run when the choke is at half - can't figure out why - yet. How are these Generac Generators? Are they any good?

Kelly 1,033 #3 Posted August 26, 2011 As for the choke thing, you either have a air leak, like a bad carb to block gasket, or a bit of dirt not letting the right amount of fuel in, now remember if you run this alot steady, change the oil every day or two, I live in the country and live with out power during storms sometimes for a few days at a time, and the gen. will run nonstop, but I like to shut it down and cool for a hour or so, and change the oil, a few $$ in oil is cheap for a good gen. I never let it run more than 48 hours with out changing the oil.
Lane Ranger 11,390 #4 Posted August 26, 2011 Generac made the Wheel Horse generators in the 1980's. Here are some photos of my 3000 Watt generator: :thumbs2:
shorts 182 #5 Posted August 26, 2011 If the choke has to be on for it to run, their is a problem with the engine not getting enough fuel, take the carb apart and use aerosol carb cleaner to make sure that all of the small fuel passages are clear and not cloged with varnish from old gas, their are small passages for fuel in the bore right where the throttle blade contacts the side of the carb at idle, if they aren't clean and fuel can,t flow thru them the choke will pull extra fuel from the main or hi speed circuits of the carb.
