darren 49 #1 Posted July 25, 2011 ..what bolts tend to be used on Wheel Horses? Are they metric/imperial/ANF...? I know it's a bit of a noddy question, but I've been unable to find any bolt sizes on any of the parts sites or in any of the yahoo groups pdfs. I'd be particularly keen to know any likely sizes for the bodywork/trim/seat of my 312-8. My current fasteners for these areas are looking distinctly worse for wear so I'd like to replace with some new s/s ones. The only other way I can think of to find out is to tap various holes in some nylon stock and see which bolts screw in to which holes.. Thanks for any advice.. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,544 #2 Posted July 25, 2011 There is a Database Table in http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wheelhorsetractormanuals1_1/ named Hardware with 4,473 entries. It was an attempt to identify hardware by part number. Enter a part number in the search box and see what comes up. Garry

rmaynard 14,951 #4 Posted July 25, 2011 Go to http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp. Select Toro Consumer Equipment. Under Model, select the 1985 312-8 (21-12K801) All of the hardware is described with sizes.

darren 49 #6 Posted July 25, 2011 A wealth of information as always! 3 different solutions to the problem, all of them just what I needed. Thanks a million! :woohoo:
meadowfield 2,545 #7 Posted August 4, 2011 just to back that up, 3 sets of tap/die - 3/8, 1/4, 5/16 UNC will do 99% - the remainder end up being self tappers or the odd random 5/16 UNF. For the screws that hold the gear change gate down and the dash, I have used 1/4" hex button head s/s which look really nice. also - at a risk of getting a good kicking from the hard core engineers... ...you can usually get away with BSW taps for cleaning out/making new threads - they seem to be easier to acquire at autojumbles etc in the UK. (I know the thread pitch is different but the TPI's match) A thread file for any bolts that are difficult to obtain, or the brake clutch linkages is also very handy. mark

I also use Whitworth form Taps (not Whit Dies on UNC Bolts though) to clean out UNC threaded holes. They don't Re-cut the thread, just clean the rust and gunge out . If you can find a parts Manual for your Tractor Darren, nearly every Nut and bolt is described in Size and Threads per Inch for every fixing point. Plenty of suppliers of Stainless UNC/UNF hardware on the 'Ole Auction Site'. I use them a lot. I also make my own Trunnion Nuts if they need replacing. mr.pipes 4 #9 Posted August 5, 2011 For the screws that hold the gear change gate down and the dash, I have used 1/4" hex button head s/s which look really nice. I have the same but in chrome. I scored 200 of them for $16.50 :woohoo:
darren 49 #10 Posted August 8, 2011 Thanks guys, for all the replies. I am now sorted I think. I found a very useful site in the UK that specialises in stainless fasteners and holds good UNC stock. I've also followed Mark and Mr Pipe's leads regarding the 1/4" hex button-heads well...they *do* say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! :woohoo:
