Could somebody give me the sizes for the drive belts, I think I am getting close, the carb is still in chem dip but I ran the engine yesterday for a minute by spraying gas at the intake with a 409 bottle. So If the carb goes back together without issues, It wont be long and it will be time to go for a ride

I think Charlies250 has the belt info. If I remember right one is 21 inches and the other :woohoo: You need to have them right or it won't work out right.

My documentation is back in Alabama, but the belt size for the belt that goes from the vari-drive pulley to the large pulley that drives the jackshaft was dependent on the size of the large pulley. Apparently that pulley (part number 1600) came in 3 sizes during the RJ-35 run; a 6 inch, 6.5 inch and 7 inch variety if memory serves. I'm sure someone on here has that manual. I believe it was the one with all the belt sizes and lubrication recommendations.

TT is right! 37A and 20A belts for 1955 model.........BUT.

Eric Van Locke is also right! in 1956 and 57 they used different size jack shaft pulleys.

6 inch pulley used WH #1556 (4L/A 20") and #1564 (4L/A 18.90")

6 1/2 inch pulley used WH #1556 (4L/A 20") and #1553 (4L/A 36")

7 inch pulley used WH #1556 (4L/A 20") and #1552 (4L/A 37")

so if yours is a 56 check pulley size.

Erick is correct it goes by Jack Shaft Pully Size. Save pic to your desktop and expand useing your picture editor or viewing program.

Mines a 6 1/2 so 20 and 36 4 L/A

Put carb on engine today started 2nd pull and idled and reved. Seems it is gonna be allright. but honestly may not be a good test since it was setting unmounted on the floor with me holding a remote gas take in one hand and tinkering with it with the other. Hopefully, I will get a chance to bolt it down on the tractor tommorrow,throw the belts on it and go for a ride. May have a remote tank in one hand, but still go for a ride.

I'm wondering also.

They all use the 1556 20" belt.

The 1564 for the 6" jack shaft pulley is listed as a 18.9" belt. Seems like it should be 35" or so.

OK, got it together and have rode it around a bit, Have a few questions. Is the big hole over the spark plug factory? It doesn't appear to be for the bigger push button kill switch since it has a place for a toggle, and doesn't have screw holes to mount the button with. And is the reversing disk supposed to have a clutching material on it that wears off or does the disc itself wear to a unusable condition. Mine just slips and will not pull the tractor in reverse. And last but not least now that I have posted better pictures of the tractor could I get a best guess on year of manufacture and some explanation as to how to date the 35's.

Short & sweet........ :woohoo:

The hole shouldn't be above the spark plug, the brass reverser disc is sacrificial, and it was built between 1955 & 1957. :ROTF:

There's going to be many opinions, but 50-some odd years later ~ and the fact that it was built from a pile of parts ~ makes it even harder to identify.

It bears more resemblance to a 1957 model, but who REALLY knows when all the little changes actually were made? :D

I would agree with TT that it looks like a 57 based on the belt guard and hood. I personally would/do not use the reverse disk.

The funny thing is that one of my 56's has the channel frame and the other is the sheetmetal :woohoo: My early 55 has NO stops on the frame for the front axle.

I agree with TT and Stevebo..... the early RJs were parts bashed machines, whatever was on hand is what they used..... For example, my 56 has a sheet metal frame, push button kill switch no name hood.

I would also agree that you machine is a 57 based on the hood and belt guard. I have found that the push button kill switches were used on the earlier units, say 55 very early 56. By 57 I have found that the RJ35s were starting to resemble the look of the 58; toggle kill switch, 13" rubber steering wheel, "Wheel Horse" pressed into the hood..... :woohoo:

You have to measure these tractors with your thumb not a micrometer.

Well, I was fairly sure it was a 57 but I had to ask. The above pretty much confirms it. The bumps instead of indentions on the backing plate. The simple spring for the pawl, etc.... . Only thing that really doesnt fit are the black rims and I happen to know for a fact that they came seperate from the original tractor. But I dont think I agree with the schnacke recoil not being used until 1960. I am pretty sure this fairbanks is original. But I am willing to listen to any opinions on that.

If it quits raining for a while meet me in the attachments section later today. Theres a reel mower going on the front of this that I am sure I will need to fab, some control linkages and drive setup for.

      Ive been thinking about selling my 4 RJ-58s and all the attachments and parts I have. I have 4 tractors-2 have Kohler K91T , 1 has the Clinton and one has no engine. Only 1 is missing the serial number decal. Kohlers run. Clinton needs a carb. I have original exhaust shields AND belt guards for 3 of them. 3 mower decks, 2 plows, cart, 2 spare transmissions, parts breakdowns, original manuals and sale tags, seats, tires.  Not sure if I should sell it as 1 big collection or break it up. And also a good starting price?  I'll post pics when I get a chance. Thanks

      i do not know how to route this throttle cable on this RJ 59, i will attach some pictures, i watched packrats video on adjusting the govner on his 401, it did not look the same. also i think that and is way to long so that might be part of it. ( and also the color on that block looks beautifull) there is come pics, the more the better!
