I've found another community focused on a US made product that is near the pinnacle of their market segment. (At least I think they're near the pinnacle.)

I'm speaking of Weber cookers.

I got our first one as a wedding present. It is a standard 18 1/2" kettle grill. I actually didn't even use it for a couple years. Then one day I decided to have a go and bought some ribs to cook. They were one of the best things I ever tasted! I could have kicked myself for not using it sooner. That began a lifelong love affair with cooking over charcoal on a Weber.

Some years later, I added a red 22 1/2" kettle to handle bigger cooks. Later on I got a Coleman propane grill and had a go with that, but found it too hot for my style of cooking. I never even finished the first 20 lb propane tank.

About a year ago I got a Weber Smoky Mountain. It's designed to smoke meat l-o-w a-n-d s-l-o-w. It opened up an entire new dimension. Whereas the kettles are great for grilling and indirect cooking, the WSM excels at smoking.

You can find them on CL or at various stores. They're even found at the big box stores. My latest addition is a propane grill about 10 years old. Some of the internals were shot, but overall it is in incredible shape.

I've grilled sonme chicken and vegetables on it and they all came out great.

I've also converted my Smokey Joe to a mini-WSM:

It's perfect size for a chicken or two or warming a ham.

Oh no! Not another thing for me to collect! Thank goodness I already have one, uh, I mean two. I have a bigger model and a nice little table top Weber grille. They are both great cookers.

Yep... gas may cook it quicker, but I'd prefer to sit with my charcoal/Weber all afternoon, oh and don't forget the beer cooler. :hide:

Yep..........even trucked my 10 plus year old Weber (like the one in the photo) 2500 miles in the trailer snugged between the 601 and RJ :disgust: .......momma had a fit because I brought a snow plow, a barbecue and a 50 cent 25 year old smoker along with tractors and mowers to the middle of the friggen desert... (There was already one of them thar big 'ol stainlessss grills here already (never used it in 7 years so far)...... But we use that Weber (and a tractor or two) just about everyday!... :hide::WRS:

going to Costco for the 99cent dark meat chicken thighs right now!

(barbecued chicken, smoked ribs, stuffed jalopenos wrapped in bacon and Bud light in a bucket of ice. The pool water is 89 degrees and grandaughter is bringing a bunch of girl friends from college for the weekend )

ahhhhhhh, life is GOOD!

PS....the problem with stainless steel barbecues is on a really hot day in Phoenix is you can get THIRD DEGREE BURNS by touching it

I was wondering about those. They look pretty cool. In the end, I decided that a more traditional gasser might be more practical and less expensive. And besides, when I have a pickup, any of them are portable. :disgust: (Except perhaps the ones that run on natural gas :WRS: )

I agree that the charcoal is better for most things, but I figured the gasser would be nice for when I wanted to grill some veggies to go with something I'm cooking in the smoker.

Hank, I have been collecting grills for years, and I did not even know it was fashionable. I have 4 that I use all the time...the one I use depends on what I am cooking. Had a natural gas Weber with the lava rocks, was great for chicken halves, but really had to keep an eye on the heat. I like the charcoal better, but there is nothing better then using the coals from various hardwoods. I never use charcoal light...use the chimney. I think I got it from my dad. If something was laying around the yard, he would make a grill out of it...boat trailer with half an oil tank on it, a split water heater looking type of thing, old refrigerator smoker, you name it. What a riot, but they all worked great. :WRS:

I think it is time for some chicken and corn on the cob (steamed in the husk on the grill peeled back and dipped in melted butter and salted) again. Yum yum. Where is my beer mug?? :hide:

Grill collecting? :hide: I have just one. A Broilmaster with flavor savor that is used at least 4 times per week. I have it tapped in to my natural gas line. No more propane tanks or running out of fuel!!

I have two weber genises,like the first one pictured. i use one at work and the other stays at the house. use so much at home i burned the flavor bars out just above the burners. my wife went to lowes and called me saying she found us a new grill. After i argued with her for seemed like an hour, she went to the parts section and bought new bars $65.00. iI will not give up my weber. forgot to metion, i drilled out the orifises for natural gas.

I'm with Steve -- A few charcoal bricks in the chimney to get the fire started -- When going good throw them down on one side behind the in-direct grates -- Toss on several chunks of cherry (my favorite), or hickory, or oak, or apple, or peach, ...., heck I just read where mulberry is really good (haven't tried that on yet) -- Put the meat of choice in the middle of my Weber Kettle -- Then come back and eat in 2 or 3 hours -- (Pork Tenderloin; gosh I am getting hungry!!!!)

Dave, I do not know if this is getting off topic, but you said "pork tenderloin"...sorry. :) Try this for a sauce to brush on that meat while it cooks:

Mix 1/4 cp soy sauce, 1/4 cp brown sugar, 1 tsp corn starch. Mix together over low heat until the starch thickens the mixture. Baste occasionally. I double the recipe and use it on the plate for dipping. :WRS: :hide:

ahhhhhhhhm yes, I know you do! And so do I !Do you know how hard (I mean difficult) it is to pretend (I mean 'to be') a 70 year old grandpa with a bunch of 20 year olds running around in bikinis but still act like a distinguished 'old man' ?????

besides GRAMMA :WRS:would beat the crap outta me for gaping! :hide:

lol..... but I have it down to a science; thick sunglasses, pretend to be annoyed by the music, no gaping, no staring, no drooling............. :disgust:

Charcoal all the way, got rid of the gas grill quit a few years ago, we have a small Webber table top round grill for camping, then we have a Kingsford grill that looks like a barrel cut in half, with cast iron grates in it, it's about ready for a sand blast and fresh paint but it is built heavy.

Though I do use the Weber gas I do agree with everyone that says charcoal is the way! It smells and taste's better.

gas grill for a fast dinner, tabletop weber for camping 20'' square for weekend dinners and a 2'x7' homebuilt with a 2 gallon garden sprayer for production ribs or chicken, large ss chimney to light 20# of charcoal at a time on the turkey fryer burner. don't kid yourself when it's time to light the big grill plan on 100# of charcoal and chicken/ribs by the case :hide:

That's great! My wife is alway's saying I'm strange for alway's taking pictures of the finished product when I smoke or grille something good. Personally I don't see the difference between taking pics of a a nice rack[ of ribs] or a newly restored tractor. It's a good feeling ! LOL
