Why do people toss stuff out?

Hi all. I found today in the rain storm a decent conditon Sach Dolmar 112 chainsaw. I got home today and clean it up a little and then made sure it wasn;t frozen, so I put a little il in the cylinder and then pulled it a bunch of times. i them drained the old gas out, and filled the chain lube oil tank. I also, checked the chain and it looked fine but a little dull and I ajusted it. I also check the plug and found it nice and tan, along with a nice blue spark. So I put a tad of ether down the plug hole and it started right up! :wh:

So i then went through the carb and got the same thing.

So, I will get some fresh gas tuesday and start her up. Now why did the owner toss this seemly decent chainsaw away?

What do you guys think? Also, how do I put a modern 19in chain and bar on this thing?

It's the same reason people get rid of anything. They say "I'm not going to invest one more dime in this piece of crap", then go out and buy a new one. So this guy doesn't want to spend any more money on his saw. His thought is, "why repair it again, just get a new one" so he throws it away.

People like you look at the saw and think that a couple of dollars invested in a free saw is not bad. For you, it's a good investment.

More power to you for fixing it. That's the  spirit.

I don't know that model. I have run a few Dolmar 7900's. I would contact your nearest Dolmar dealer for the correct bar/chain. Great find, they are nice saws.. Good luck!

Horse'n Around

Ive seen it many a time where folks... especially those that are either lazy or not mechanically inclined will use something then for one reason or another it either quits or starts to work poorly then they put it aside either thinking they might get it fixed later or maybe it will fix itself. After it sits for a while they lose interest in it and just toss it. After working at my friends outdoor power repair shop, I couldn't get over just how many machines came in with nothing more wrong with it than old gas. With todays gas it doesn't even take that long to get to the point where it loses its volatility especially in the heat of AZ where a cup of gas in a bowl will evaporate leaving a puddle of nasty oily goop in no time. Ive seen gas start to turn bad in a matter of a couple of months. Eight out of ten times all I would have to do is drain the tank and give the carb and filters a good cleaning it would start right up.

Some people just dont want to be "bothered" with maintaining their tools

Im glad that you were able to snag it and fix it up.

John

i allways look at a pile of garbage when i drive by. i pulled out a mint 1970's JD chainsaw. has a 20" bar and is a heavy old tank, sounds like a dirt bike when running . i only use it on large wood.

Just picked up a Kennedy tool box last week that was tossed. No damage, unfortunately no tools left in it, but beggers can't be choosers!

It baffles me why some of these things are just tossed aside.......oh well it makes for a little excitement in my day.

I found today in the rain storm a decent condition Sach Dolmar 112 chainsaw

Are you sure it wasn't all bloody and the rain had washed it off????? were there heavy black plastic bags nearby?? :D

The only problem with 'finding things' is after a while your wife starts to NOT believe you! (really honey, I found this Ford 8N in a dumpster!).......I used to love 'Clean Up Week' in Somerset County NJ. (with all the big houses)...they even had a law: "No garbage PICKING".......yeah sure that works, the people running around (including me) were like mice in a seed store.

My neighbor threw out an old 'Huffy' mower.....I noticed it had brand new tires so I grabbed them. The fronts were the same size as my JD 116...60 bucks saved! I just consider it the finest form of recycling.

ed :D :wh:

I would love to get one of those. They are very cool, old fasion looking.

Yeah, I will run some fresh gas in the saw and see if it runs. Worst comes to worst i will have to rebuild or replace the carb. Thats nothing. I will also try and fine a dealer ot support this thing and see about getting a new chain and bar for it.

Also, once i get it working fine mechanicly, then i will take it apart and give it a good cleaning and paint job, as a good bit of the paint is coming off, but it not steel so it not rusting.

Thanks guys for everything and i will try and get some picture of it working this week cutting down a small tree at my friend's house.

Like they say "One mans junk is another mans treasure"!! :wh:

"I'm tired of walking around it" is a common reason. That's how I acquired my 400. I bought a set of tires from him for $30 bucks & he gave me $20 back for taking the 400 to the scrapyard.

...MY scrapyard

"dumpster diving" is popular up here. We're starting garage sale season & I always find good things to drag home & hide from the wife this time of year.

This is a great thread! There's one other kind of person I don't see mentioned here - the ""Keeping up with the Joneses" Dude. He'll have a perfectly good Whatsis that runs like a Swiss watch, but John across the street gets a newer model, the Whatsis II, and Dude just can't be outdone, so he either runs out and gets his own Whatsis II, or even better, the Whatsis II Limited! Since Dude can't be seen with an old Whatsis he either hides it or sneaks it off to the Recycling Center. You get the picture. Now granted, this economy has made keeping up with the Joneses or anyone else a lot less attractive, but I'd bet a six-pack of anyone's favorite beverage that we all have known or do know someone like Dude! And I'll bet most of us have quietly waited to pounce on Dude's cast-offs. I sure as heck have!

Also, everyone great news! I gave the saw some fresh gas and it came strait to life! It does however have a hard time idling for long times but that perfecly fine with me. HEHE.
