My new 520 and Ranger on steriods

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd take a couple pics of the 520 I picked up for $50 (including the mower deck) and my '63 lawn ranger with the 13 horse, 8-speed and dual AGs. The front tires are from the junkyard, wanted a little different look. They are off a Sears, and are too narrow for the spindle. Had to put some spacers on the inside to keep from rubbing the axle.

The 520 is gonna be getting a 10 horse diesel clone, along with a quick paint job. Tractor overall is in very good shape for sitting outside. Serial says it's a 91. Has 1" spindles, gear reduction, hydro tranny, tires are good enough for now.

Also gonna build a loader for this too. Picked up a small welder, can get the metal pretty cheap maybe even for free.

Looks good but are you sure that's a lawn ranger?

I'm going out on a limb to say that is not a ranger, but would need better pictures to say for sure, but I can say it's a 1962 machine, but has 5 bolt hubs, earlier steering wheel, is the right side foot rest peg removable? it has a foot rest on it so I'm going to say no. that tells me it's not a ranger.

Kelly in his post he said it has a 8 speed in it so I'm sure that's why there's five lug hubs on it. Otherwise it's hard to call it anything but a Frankenstein machine...

It's a 63 lawn ranger. Put in a 13 horse clone, 8-speed rear, 702 front axle/spindles, junkyard front wheels and dually kit for the rear. Thinking it's going back to stock ranger stuff save for a K181 recoil I got laying around....

If the camera didn't die, I took the hupcaps off the rear of the 520 and put them on the 63 with the duals, looks friggin' cool....

yes the right side peg is removable, had a copper coupler on it when I first got it. When I had the mower on it last summer, wasn't really comfortable having my feet on the deck....

since it was a real nice day, I washed both tractors a little, and some tinkering. I parted out a B-81 (think that's what it was, had a K181) that I kept some parts off of. One thing I kept was the motor plate. I went to my storage and found that plate sitting in a box of other stuff that I was gonna scrap. Thought to myself, maybe I could use that. So went back to the house, and tried the B-81 plate on the 520, bolts right up!! So, I have another K181 that I haven't heard run yet, so gonna bolt it on and see if it runs!!!! Also to see if the hydro works. The hour meter says 265 hours on it.

Got the diesel this morning, mounted it up and got running this afternoon. Gonna have to do something bout the air filter, hood won't close with it on. I'm gonna make a flange so I can put the filter where the muffler is now. Gonna make another flange so I can put a stack on it. Where the outlet is right now points right where the battery goes, also diesel fuels are nastier smelling than a gasser....

If you come up with a flange for the muffler, please post some pictures, as I'm stuck on that one right now for my diesel.

Also, nice tractor you got there. they look nice.

that part will be easy. I had to make one for the 13 horse clone in the other tractor.

I took the metal gasket off and traced onto a piece of heavy paper. Made sure the bolt holes and ports lined up. Traced that onto a piece of 1/4" plate I had laying around. Used a sawzall and a cut off wheel to make the shape, drilled the holes for mounting, then had to buy a 1" holesaw to make the port. Got a piece of 1" pipe, welded to the flange, ground and smoothed, done.

The air filter is gonna be the stinker with this one. Not in less I can find a thinner filter, gonna have to make a flange for the intake, then run a tube to where the muffler is now. Then I can get a bigger air filter on there. With that and a free flow exhaust, should run pretty good.

Does anyone know how to turn the fuel up on these?? With more air going in and out, gonna need more fuel....
