6wheeler 669 #1 Posted April 5, 2011 I made a reference to these in the funny forum, but I didn't want to get too far off topic in there. Puddlejumper, you asked if I had live weights on these turkeys. Yes I did. The tom that dressed out at 48 lbs. was 59.5 lbs. live, and the hen was 47.75 lbs. live weight and 38 lbs. dressed. These were domestic birds and the two wild ones I tried were 30 lbs(live) and 28 lbs(live) respectively. The two wild ones could still fly quite well. My wife had to go online to order a roasting pan to fit the big tom. I just picked up 50 broiler chicks that I am hoping to finish out around 14 to 16 lbs. Obviously, we had no shortage of turkey for Thanksgiving
puddlejumper 67 #2 Posted April 5, 2011 I didnt think they would dress out that well percentage wise. Thats not bad at all. If these chicks are not cornish crosses try some. I swear they grow faster than their feathers. But dont try to raise the them with your average egg producer they will get stomped in the ground. To fat and slow to compete. 6wheeler 669 #3 Posted April 5, 2011 Oh yeah, They are crossed. I used to raise only broilers and then got the wild idea to try some layers. Way too much work, I am going back to broilers. Chicks to freezer, 12 and 1/2 weeks :D
