Any clue what this is?

Horse-Drawn

First off... I'm a long time stalker of this group & as of tonight, a new member.

I'm not new to Wheel Horses, I grew up in Indiana around tons of them. My family has owned several over the years including a B-80 that I have now.

Last year, I started to bring my B-80 back from the dead & while looking for parts, I found this one in the picture. I was actually PAID to take it from the old man that owned it. He gave me gas money to scrap it for him. :D

Now... I'm not stupid (I think)... I know this is worth more than scrap, but the question is what do you guys think this is? It looks like a 1960 or 1961, but maybe some mixed parts? There are no numbers or marking on it that I can find besides the engine. The k91 appears to be correct for this style, but its serial indicates it's from 1970. I love the style of this model & would love to restore it. What kind of $$$ will it cost me? Any help would be great! Thanks in advance :wh:

First, let me start off by saying ...

Hard to say actually, but the 400, 401 or 550 were essentially the same with the exception of the engine. The three=piece uni-drive narrows the field to these three models. A few more pictures would perhaps help to narrow it down a little further.

First Welcome, second yes worth more than scrap, as it sets I'd say you have $150, more if you part it out, for you to fix it up?? that depends on how nice you want it, what all it needs, how much work you can do your self?, but I will tell you there is NO money in fixing them up and trying to turn a profit, you will have more into it that it will be worth, good luck with it.

It's nice to meet everyone...

I appreciate the info so far & as soon as I can see more than the seat back I'll post more pics of it. I live in the part of northern WI that was hit with 18" of snow a few days ago.

I was curious so I'd have an idea of how to explain to my wife why I'm throwing several hundred dollars at a lawn ornament, lol.

I am not looking to profit from this, if I decide to invest in this piece of history, I would never sell it.

Until I get more pics, I notice that not all models like this one have the drop axle. Most pics I've seen have the straight axle. Does that help to narrow down which one this is? ...just want to be sure I'm hunting parts for the correct yr/mod. I did see one of you posted a copy of the collective "round nose" parts manual. I will start comparing #'s to see how specific I need to be.

Thanks again,

Jay

Howdy Jay,

 Thats a nice tractor, it will be a fun project . I say go for it and fix R up. Its not like it all has to be done at one time, just take your time. What counts is to keep it fun and enjoy:thumbs2: Oh and you might want to start thinking bout making room for more :wh: They're addictive :D

What's it worth? That reminds me of that ad on TV....

Unrestored and rusty: $100 bucks

Broken up and Parted out: $200 bucks

Restored and beautiful: PRICELESS!

the tank is ok, but the cap is missing.

the transaxle is not locked up, but it's tight enough it won't roll freely.

the engine will run off wd-40, but the carb is frozen & cracked.

...so I have a nice project for this spring, lol

Trans might be water in it, and just cold/froze, get it warm and pull the drain plug in the bottom.

It's a 1960 400 suburban. The pics you are looking at with the straight front axels are RJs. You can get a new cap for the tank at any place that sells lawnmower parts for $2. Too bad that hood is all cut up. That's going to be the biggest effort to fix or find.
