Yet again another round-hood follows me home. This time a 1961 Wheel Horse 701, along with an incorrect Kohler K181. Lots of things to correct on this one ...

Since this is a 1961 701 Round-Hood, and 701's were a "transitional" configuration machine (from the perspective of containing many uncommon parts), it will be restored as was done to the RJ58. It'll look good sitting next to them.

What I call a 100% complete Restoration: 100% original configuration, 100% "correct" restored/refurbished parts, 100% pretty as all get-out.

The paint job will be un-original in that the process will contain a primer step, which WH did not do in most cases, but from a mechanical standpoint it will be 100% "correct" when completed. Right down to the double belt and guard on the Kohler K161.

So far I see that the steering gear on the steering shaft is round vs. square, the fenders have been "clipped" (points missing), and the seat is incorrect. There are a lot of holes in the hood and other places which need to be closed, and the transmission needs to come completely down and fully rebuilt (the infamous $75 Toro proprietary bearing), throttle is missing, etc. ...

I'll eventually start a thread over in restorations so all interested parties can follow along with the "new saga". I'll probably start an article over on MWH as well, we'll see.

Mike, thought about doing the same thing to the same tractor and at the last minute after talkin' to the owner, decided not to bid on it. I got buried on my 550 restoration trying to make it correct ( a $400 tractor new ended up costing me around $1800). Was it worth it? Every penny of it. Good Luck with it and glad someone from here ended up with it. I guess I'm just runnin' out of time and patience anymore. :thumbs:

Didn't mean to steal one out from under you. Glad you decided not to bid, I'd really be heartbroken if I found out later I was bidding against one of my own. The funny thing is that no one else bid on it but me. Perhaps I am the only one foolish enough to take it on. I think I got a hell of a deal for what I paid for it.
