theoldwizard1 2 #1 Posted March 16, 2011 I just have to vent ! I'm certain a lot of you search Craig's List for used equipment. I can understand that they might not know the vintage, but why can't people put the basics down. Like WHAT MODEL IT IS ! In most cases, it is painted right on the side ! Second, don't people realize how stupid it sounds when they say their C145 or C101, etc. has a 16hp Kohler. Highly doubtful ! And how about putting a tape measure on the mower deck. Sigh

rydogg 186 #3 Posted March 16, 2011 I recently called about a wheel horse listed on craigslist as a C151 when I called I asked him to check the number on the hood because wheel horse never made a 151 it ended up being a C141 price was right so I picked it up. Sigh I know what your saying but...... often times that is when a good deal can be had, and way to often they do use a tape measure on the top of the deck and come up with a 52" deck or 44" deck, I'm dealing with a guy right now that had no clue what model it was, and didn't want to go look or mess with pictures, but still wants $400 for it, I told him no thanks, gas cost to much to just drive a hour to find out it's not what I want, he decided to send pictures, now I'm going to let him set on it for a few days, not sure if I want to buy it or not, like I need another one

VinsRJ 723 #7 Posted March 16, 2011 In the end these are for the most part old tractors with interest of the lay person at very minimal levels. They either aquired the tractor unwillingly through a family member or the tractor has reached the end of its useful life in the their mind. Either way care factor is "0" I'm sure.
mavfreak 11 #8 Posted March 16, 2011 I agree if the seller has no clue then a deal could be had at a better price. But what kills me is when they list it as a "one of a kind" or "very collectible" and then ask for top dollar on a non running rusted out no mower deck or unusable mower deck. I seen this all on an A80. And he wants as much as if you was buying a c160. And I keep seeing a guy listing the same lawn mower for about a year now and its a 2009 toro wheel horse V shaft with an 8hp briggs on it. I want to just call him and say listen your price is through the roof at 800 and its just a lawn mower just cause it says wheel horse on it doesn't mean its built like a wheel horse so stop saying there isn't a garden tractor built like this wheel horse! I actually kinda just get a good laugh out of some of the postings!
buckeye 5 #9 Posted March 16, 2011 My recent favorite was an ad the said: "very rare, highly collectable wheel horse 312-8, does not run. $1000 . Hurry, wont last long!" I had a good laugh outta that one
6wheeler 669 #10 Posted March 16, 2011 I saw one yesterday, A C-181. I had to look twice, hmmm. Never heard of that :dunno:" Listen to only half of what the ad says, and believe only a third of that".
GlenPettit 1,717 #11 Posted March 16, 2011 On the other hand, that poor description can work in our favor with the right questions, a better deal may be found sometimes. Being a collector & wanting a tractor and sharing information can help (but HAS also hurt) to get a great deal, it's smart to follow up and at least talk, but distance and gas makes a big difference now. The "Wheel Horse" brand name always suggests Quality and Value to everyone, no matter what the tractor actually looks like. Michigan Glen
Buzz 502 #12 Posted March 17, 2011 I like it when they post a picture taken with their phone, after dark, no flash, and in a shed with all kinds of things piled on it and in front of it. Oh yeah, I'm going to drive an hour for that. Of course I did see an ad that the header said "lawn mower $50". When I clicked on it it was a 1973 14 Automatic. I emailed him instantly "I'll take it!!!!" And I did.
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,527 #13 Posted March 17, 2011 I agree with Glen on this one. You find a much better deal when the seller does not know what they have.
Kelly 1,033 #14 Posted March 17, 2011 Well I was 5 min. to late just this week, on a CL ad that said "three tractors", I clicked on it to see 3 MTD junkers I was getting ready to click the back button and the word Wheelhorse caught my eye, so I read the ad it said he had a 44" and 38" WH deck for sale also no pictures, but wanted $150 each, I asked him to send me pictures, he did later last sun. they were a 48" and 42" both near new, so I grabbed the phone and called only to have him say, he just got off the phone minutes before with a guy wanting to look at one, we talked for 20 min. super nice guy, he said one was near new, the other almost as nice, in our conversation, I figured out who the guy going to look was, I will not say his name but he is a RS member and nice guy, lucky to boot, he bought both decks, but the ad did not say WH in the title or even a picture of the decks, just the MTD junk.
