Roots

My Daughter had twins 2 years ago so I am a proud grandpa !

Daughter and Son-In-Law have a nice little, older house with nice, tiny, little back yard. They have one huge tree and one medium which means that the backyard is nothing but roots. Cutting what little grass is there is difficult with the mower bouncing over the roots. Worse the 1.5 car garage slab is less than 2" above grade.

I know it will never be perfect, but it possible to get it smooth enough for a kiddie pool. or play house ?

Those surface roots are called "feeder roots". That's where the tree absorbs most of its nutrients. As long as you don't cover too much of them on each individual tree, you should be fine. For the pool, I think sand might be your best alternative. For a play area, maybe consider enough sand to cover the area, then over the sand put down some driveway underlayment or other breathable fabric. Then cover the fabric with playground mulch.
