linen beige 15 #1 Posted May 17, 2008 This evening I was out in the back yard watching my twin girls and our dog chase each other around, when Mama came in from work. Since we were out back, I grabbed the camera and fired up the 1054a. We got a couple shots of me and the girls sitting on it and then they took their very first Wheel Horse ride (albeit short, Kohlers are loud to 3 year olds.). Not one to play favorites, I had one on my left and one on my right. I have GOT to find a wagon! And then, when I asked the wife if she wanted to take it for a lap around the yard, SHE DID!!! TWICE!!!:wtf: With the second lap in HIGH GEAR!!! This from the girl who said "If you have more than one garden tractor but no garden, you just might be a redneck." I think that was the first time she has ever riden or driven a tractor of any kind. I hope to post a couple pics in the next day or two. I might have even gotten a few seconds of low quality video of the wife!
Rollerman 290 #2 Posted May 17, 2008 This from the girl who said "If you have more than one garden tractor but no garden, you just might be a redneck." Hey I resemble that remark.... I do have a garden this year....but it's not even big enough to work with a Wheel Horse.... Sounds like the twins may get the bug in a few years....do I see a matching set of Lawn Rangers or Suburbans in there future? :WRS:
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,641 #3 Posted May 17, 2008 Anytime you can enjoy a day or an event with family, it's a good day. And since a Wheel Horse was also involved, it's even better.
nylyon-(Admin) 8,194 #4 Posted May 17, 2008 Get the trailer. You can fill it up with hay, pillows or just about anything soft. Then watch their faces as you drag them around the yard. Make sure mom gets the pictures for you!
bowtieguy 334 #5 Posted May 17, 2008 Hey Jim in KY....twins, huh?....I can only hope I live long enough to enjoy a WH ride with my triplet grandsons!!...eight months old now.....I've got a WH trailer and 2 Lawn Rangers.....got to find a couple more before they get too old.....can see the video now....6'2" grandpa and three little guys all driving Lawn Rangers.!! linen beige 15 #6 Posted May 17, 2008 Sounds like the twins may get the bug in a few years....do I see a matching set of Lawn Rangers or Suburbans in there future? They already have a little of the bug. When I'm using one they like to watch from the house. The one that started it all for me is my daddy's 400 suburban, which he bought in 1960 (It was 2 months used,he paid $200) and gave to me in 1995. I have since added an RJ-58. They are like my girls, pretty hard to tell a difference from a distance, but when you get close you can see some subtle differences. Or maybe I need a 1054 to go along with my 1054a? They'll be driving them before you know it.

Make sure mom gets the pictures for you! I couldn't agree more. My kids used to go to our church around Halloween for a hay ride. They had a HUGE trailer, and a farm tractor pulling it... I never thought I could compete with that. But when I put hay in my little trailer (seats about 6 kids squeezed together), you would've thought they were going to a parade. My little girls had every kid in the neighborhood lined up for a ride. When the kids are little, it's just cooler when Dad is driving I guess. Too bad that thought dosen't last long... Enjoy every moment you get, and if they like red tractors, you're even better off! Kevin
linen beige 15 #9 Posted May 17, 2008 I really want a four wheel wagon instead of a two wheel cart. Wagons don't porpoise on uneven ground, and you can unhitch a loaded one without dumping the load. Most will also hold more weight.
Nick 13 #10 Posted May 17, 2008 Sounds like the kids and even the wife had fun on the 1054. 3 years old might be near tractor driving time on the 1054. If you dont find a 4 wheel wagon for the kids you might try building one. On a project about 5 years ago I used a WH tractor frame with front axle plus some plywood, angle iron and some red paint and decals to make a Wheel Horse wagon. CasualObserver 3,411 #11 Posted May 17, 2008 Along the lines that Nick is talking about... check out this wagon project... (just ignore the fact that it's yellow!) It starts at the bottom just after the tractor and continues on page 2. http://www.highridgetractorparts.com/current_projects.html

Nick, Your 1054 looks a LOT better than mine! Jr. wants to reach that clutch SO bad doesn't he. With twins, mine may figure out that one could work the clutch/brake while the other worked the steering and I'd be out of a tractor! I have batted around the idea of trying to copy a UW-64 if I can come up with some measurements, but all my work has to be done outside, when the kids and dog aren't in the danger zone.
CasualObserver 3,411 #14 Posted May 19, 2008 Jim, if you need measurements, I can get them. Let me know what you need or have questions on. I'm planning on getting my wagon out next weekend (got some mulch to haul) and can take plenty of pics too.

bell 11 #18 Posted October 18, 2008 That's GREAT! My oldest daughter drove her first geared transmission WH yesterday! Both of my girls have been driving the 876 (hydro) but it is in need of some MAJOR repairs... She found out that the 855 wasn't much harder to drive... The little one needs to grow a little more before she can reach the clutch pedal...
hodge 6 #19 Posted October 19, 2008 I'm sure some of you can relate- it was rides around the neighborhood that started my love for lawn/garden tractors. My neighbor, Mr. Royer, would hook his little wagon up, once in a blue moon, and pull us kids around the neighborhood. Those memories rank right up there with sleeping under the Christmas tree, waiting to catch Santa. I was very small, but I was enthralled by it all. My kids today have memories of me pulling them around the field and woods in a trailer behind the ATV, and even though they are teens now, they still ask for me to take them for night rides. I will not be surprised to be doing this into their adulthoods, much less with the future grandkids! It's a shame that some kids/folks never had the chance to make memories like these...
