Thread Repair options??

Recommended Posts

mowerman1193

I bought a new old stock Delta scroll saw back around Christmas time for a very good price ( so I thought ). I have not really messed with it much but have used it a little. Been waiting for the right temps and time to use it. today I dig it out and get ready to make some Wheel Horse keychains and guess what..it broke before I even put a blade in it. So I take it apart and find a special made screw had fallen out. Upon trying to put it back together I realize the threads are stripped out. So I look online and find that the stripped out part is no longer available. I have never used any of the heli-coil things and do not even know if that is available in the small size ( Guessing 5M ). Any ideas from some of you that have been there done that on thread repairs..

On a side note while I have this apart I start to look it over and find a couple more loose bolts and screws. Figure this must have been made at shift change or something. I hope they didn't just throw all of them together like this, LOL.. Maybe later today I will try to get some pictures of what I am working with..

Thanks,

Kevin

Well I think they make a heli-coil for that and you will have to buy the correct drill size for it also. they work great and the repair is stronger then the orignal threads. some applications use heli-coils from the start. take the screw to your local tool store, hardware, or auto parts supplier and see what you can find. Good Luck!!

Could you just tap the hole one size bigger?

Scott, I will have to check around for the helicoil. I wasn't sure if they made them that small or not.

I could tap this hole larger, however that would make me have to find another source for this special shoulder type screw that is counter sunk. Kind of hard to explain without pictures but anyway I would like to be able to use the same screw if I can.

Will look for the helicoil..other option is have my neighbor ( machinist ) fix me up. Would be easy fix for him..I just don't have the tools/resources to do much myself..

Thanks,

Kevin
