Engine Identification Help...

Recommended Posts

mattd860

I want to order genuine Kohler parts for my K301s spec # 473400 engine but I need help identifying which engine I have. The parts for my engine are either for serial numbers BEFORE 1730100013 or AFTER 1730100003. However, my serial number is e00030365 which doesn't match the other two numbers I mentioned earlier.

For example, I need a .020 over sized piston however they list part number 47-874-09-S for serial numbers before 1730100013 or part number 47-874-19-S for serial numbers after 1730100003. See picture below...

What is even the difference in the parts? A .020 bore is the same on all K301 engine blocks isn't it?????

Can someone give me some advice and maybe even tell me what serial number e00030365 even means and why it doesn't match normal serial numbers? Also, which parts should I order in the future - parts before serial # 1730100013 or parts after serial # 1730100003??????

Thanks

PS. My local parts supplier is clueless

Here's the parts manual which contains your spec number. You engine spec is at the bottom of page 17 in the manual (spec. # 47835). Piston & Rod should be Group 22 parts, starting on page 84.

Have you taken the engine apart already. If so the crankshaft normally has the part number cast into it. That should lead you to which parts you need. Look for a 6-digit number cast into the counterbalance.

Ok I will check the crankshaft casting later when I get home.

Why do you say my spec number is found on the bottom of page 17 as spec # 47835? My spec # is 47340 and found on page 10.

Also - the manual doesn't help me because it still says to purchase a part # before serial # 1730100013 or after serial # 1730100003. My serial # (e00030365) doesn't match either of those numbers so I have no idea if my serial number is before or after any of those two.

My problem isn't identifying the spec #s, it's the serial #'s. No K301 serial number in that book begins with an "e" with eight numbers after it. All the serial numbers listed are just a 10 digit number.

In the manual, I need a piston w/Ring set from variation #1 which is either part # 47-874-09 or part # 47-874-19. Which part # do I need??

I called Kohler and after getting transfered around to various people and places I finally got a guy who would answer my questions rather than transfer me and he was extremely helpful.

He basically said that it doesn't matter which parts (before or after the serial #) I put in my K301 but that I cannot mix and match the parts. I must use either all parts before serial # 1730100013 or all parts after serial #1730100003.

I know you already have it figured out, but serial # E00030365 is WAY before serial #1730100013.

Your engine is a 1969 & the break in the serial number for the "built before or after" is 1987.
