Looking for a cheap steel stockist

Recommended Posts

Afternoon Guy's and Gal's, I am looking for a cheap steel stockist (in the Kent area would be handy) so I can order all the structural steel for my six wheeled project.

I have had a look at Metals4u online and found them to be quite expensive and they don't stock all the steel I need. Also it's a bit of a pain having to buy in 3m or 6m lengths.

austenknapman.co.uk on the other hand have in stock all that I need for quite a good price, just waiting a quote from them.

If I can get my steel cheaper I will be a happy chappy

Anyone got any ideas? I need box, rectangular box, angle, flat plate and round bar..

Ta-muchly in advance

Ian,

you'll not get good prices if you buy short lengths, often its only a couple of quid more to get a full length (take a hacksaw when you collect).

Best bet is to find a local fab shop and stick your head in. They might have offcuts from projects. Thats how I bought all my steel to begin with.

That website you linked to isnt badly priced having just had a quick glance.

Strange as it sounds Jim for what I want short lengths work out cheaper from austenknapman than longer lengths from Metals4U!!

Free delivery is a big help as well.

I have been hunting the net for local fab shops and not come up with anything..

But I have just remembered a fab shop that I did kinda work experience at many moons ago.. I know they are still there, so I will drop in next time I'm that way..

I think metal4u prices were a bit higher than what I was expecting to pay last time I looked.

Hi Ian,

did you get your steel yet?

What is it that you are after? I might be able to help.
