stevebo-(Moderator) 8,059 #1 Posted January 29, 2011 Guys, I just bought this 1953 generator with a K90 with Schnakee recoil. Anyone know if this is a gear reduction?
buckrancher 2,678 #2 Posted January 29, 2011 Steve If it's a gear reduction unit you should see a cast add on gear box piece on the crankshaft end of the motor about 2 inches thick as it's external not internal from the pic's it looks direct drive to me Brian
Gene_S 93 #3 Posted January 29, 2011 Steve being a generator I'd think they would want to spin the armature as fast as the motor would run and not be reduced in speed. Just a thought... :banghead:
buckrancher 2,678 #4 Posted January 29, 2011 k90 with gear reduction unit Brian :banghead:
VinsRJ 721 #5 Posted January 29, 2011 Most likely not a grear reduction but I believe it will have a special PTO crank shaft. It might not be 3/4 keyed :banghead:
Kelly 1,028 #6 Posted January 29, 2011 Lots of generator applications use a tapered PTO shaft, but finding a crank to swap shouldn't be real hard, that recoil was a nice find.

There it is........ tapered! My mind totally went blank there for a few. Finding a good 3/4" keyed crank may take a little work though. I know MikesRJ looked for a while for his. Unless money is no object :banghead:
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,059 #8 Posted January 30, 2011 This unit is super clean !! Runs perfect !! This is an actual kohler generator. It fired right up and I am real happy with it. This motor has a larger oil pan that is different from most. If I put it on one of my RJs then I guess I have some work to do. Based on how it runs it will be worth the effort. Check out the video of it running.
bell 11 #9 Posted January 30, 2011 That is AWESOME! It would be a shame to take it apart... A true piece of history! It would look great as a display at the shows.... Or, make a hitch mount and put it on the back of a RJ... :banghead:
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,059 #10 Posted January 30, 2011 Jon, I agree !! As much as I would love to see this motor mounted on one of my RJs or 400 I do not think I have the heart to do it !! It is very heavy so mounting it may be an issue.. Maybe I can make a small cart to pull it around :banghead:
bell 11 #11 Posted January 30, 2011 Maybe I can make a small cart to pull it around How about a miniature version of the 4-wheel wagon.... with the generator mounted inside? Or, a front mount on a Suburban or other round hood would be AWESOME! :banghead:
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,059 #12 Posted January 30, 2011 Jon, You suck ! Now you have me thinking and I need to do that for the show !!!
Kelly 1,028 #13 Posted January 30, 2011 I agree that is just to cool to tear apart, I'm sure not many that nice left.
wallfish 15,972 #14 Posted January 30, 2011 That is sweeeet! Nice score Steve and can't wait to see it in person.
Docwheelhorse 2,561 #15 Posted January 30, 2011 Sounds real nice.... but is it screaming???? the R's sound high to me---unless they turn these K90's to 4000???? Tony
dclarke 4,011 #16 Posted January 30, 2011 That is just too cool Steve!
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,059 #17 Posted January 30, 2011 Tony, The gen plate says 3600rpm and I agree that seems hiher than 3600. I will have to have my buddy Ken B check it with his digital rpm gauge before running it again... :banghead:
TT-(Moderator) 1,129 #18 Posted January 30, 2011 You could also check the AC voltage output at the generator, Steve. If it's over 120 - 125 VAC, you could slow the engine down some.
wheelhorsecravins 0 #19 Posted January 31, 2011 Nice unit, I bought one the past summer for the k-90 engine, the oil pan is wide as the genarator base is part of it, it runs great and genarates power, I need to weld the base it is cracked, no big deal. mike
1961551 2 #20 Posted January 31, 2011 according to my kohler manual, these are governed at 4,000 insted of 3,600 rpm. jimmy
TT-(Moderator) 1,129 #21 Posted January 31, 2011 A K90 is 3600 rpm (3.6hp) & a K91 is 4000 rpm (4.0hp) Steve: is THIS the same generator? :banghead:
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,059 #22 Posted January 31, 2011 Looks exactly the same. I will go check the Kohler model number.
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,059 #23 Posted January 31, 2011 Here is the info on the Kohler Tag on the actual generator (not the motor) Model 1.5M 25 Serial 198 787 Watts 1500 Volts 115AC RPM 3600 I would assume that is decent output. My Honda puts out 2000...
