Fire breathing Dodge Ram Key Rack

Recommended Posts

Not sure if you guys remember that post last fall about my 14 year old son getting his first truck but, anyway..Tomorrow is his 15th birthday so I had to come up with something to make him for his B-day. I had just started playing around with a resin inlay material for something new to mess with and I came up with this idea for a key rack.

He has no where to hang his keys and so he keeps them in our junk drawer ( everyone has one of those right?) . I cut the main rack out from 1/2" Oak then cut out another 1/8" Oak to glue to the main rack. then I filled the cutout with the red resin ( somewhat like fiberglass resin..stinks like it too, lol ) Then sand the piece flat and put a finish on it. This is not done as I still have to ad the gold plated key hooks but I couldn't wait to show off, LOL

Now my head is spinning with ideas for....you guessed it Wheel Horse stuff with this inlay stuff..Might have to buy a can of black and make some of these with the red Horse logo and a black wheel..This stuff is very pricey though at $40 for a half pint ouch..

Thanks,

Kevin

Well, He opened up his presents this morning. He said " WOW THAT IS COOL DAD "..

Yes I think the Wheel Horse one would be very cool, might be a while though as this stuff is pricey and I only have red at this time. The Horse logo would take quit a lot of the resin. Might try cutting just the outline of the logo and see how it looks but I am not sure if I can make it cost effective to be able to sell them. I probably will be making Wheel Horse key chains soon with this inlay material.

chesbaycruiser, I cut these free hand using a Dewalt DW788 scroll saw..

I actually made two of these but the other one I am not going to put the red inlay in it. I am going to glue it to a dark colored wood like walnut. Maybe when I get it finished I will post pictures of that one too.

Thanks for the nice comments,

Kevin

Wow, that really looks good.

Is there a way to tint/color regular epoxy resin? Might be an option in order to reduce costs :banghead:

Yes there is a way to do it. That is what they do for fiberglass boats etc..I am looking into that hopefully one of these days..
