Late yesterday, I posted about a Wheelhorse Tractor for sale on CL for $75.00.

This is not my tractor but I thought someone mught be interested. Too far for me and I don't need another.

Did I fail to submit thread or was it deleted for some reason?

RedSquare does not allow links to Craigslist or eBay ads unless it is your item, so it is quite possible that your post was removed by a moderator.

Yeah, I never quite understood that...

If there happens to be a 55 RJ cable steer on CL for $50, I wouldn't want anyone here to have a crack at it. I'd rather see some Cub guy buy it and upsell it to us here instead :banghead:

Because everyone always wants to be helpful. When you put the link here, someone (doesn't have to be a member) sends a note to the owner of the machine saying "You know, that tractor is worth $300" the ad suddenly disappears and is relisted for $300, meanwhile someone is on their way to pick up what they thought was a $50 RJ, what a surprise when they got there.

That scenario has happened more than 1 times because of listings here and that is the reason for the rule.

I can fully appreciate that, but on the other side of the coin, if I had a Deere I knew nothing about and advertised it for $150, would I be appreciative that someone told me it was a $1500 Deere 318?

Little different when you put the shoe on the other foot huh? :banghead:

Not really, no.

We trust that a member will list what he feels is a fair price to other members HERE for an item, or accept an offer he feels is fair. So long as the buyer and seller are happy with the price then we have no issue with it. In the end, there is no "Kelly Blue book" for our hobby. "What it's worth" is up to the parties involved.

If the seller is not happy with offers (if he has asked for them), then at least there are no disagreements to contend with. The staff here is not equipped to settle disputes over such things, so the rules are in place to prevent as much of this as possible.

If a seller is unsure of the personal value of an item as your scenario suggests, it would be better for that seller to use an auction site like Ebay or something similar. If the seller prefers, and is a member here, he can post a link to the auction in the classifieds section.

In short, the rules allow for situations such as you've suggested, as long as the individual is a member here.

Well, it is your site and we're just visitors here so certainly you can run it in any fashion you think is best. I sincerely respect that. But as a matter of opinion, if your view is accurate than all other forums must be immune to the epidemic that the Wheel Horse tractor ads are suceptible to, because all other forums have sections for various classified ads relating to the collector club at hand. Just an observation.

Matt, I must disagree with you in part - this is OUR site and we are all MEMBERS.

The rules were made up after a whole lot of thought, discussion and controversy with the good of the larger group in mind. Before the rules were put in place there were some pretty ugly deals that came down, and a lot of hard feelings came with them. I'd like to think we're way beyond that now.

While in an ideal world we could trust everyone to be completely up front, transparent and honest in their deals, that's sadly not the world we live in. Karl and the moderators agonized over how to impose reasonable controls to keep this place both vibrant and civil. The result has been over 4,000 members and a wealth of information, sales, trades, swaps, gifts, and perhaps most valuable - friendships made with the rules we have.

I can't speak to the other tractor sites because I don't have time to visit them - it's all I can do to keep up with what's going on here, so I won't dispute your observation on that point. Funny, though, I've read countless posts from members coming here from other tractor sites who are delighted at just how great this place is compared to what they've been used to. That to me says a lot.

Thanks for reading.......

As for the other tractor sites, there are some who imposed stricter rules when it comes to posting CL and ebay ads. Two come to mind, WFM and IHCC. Both have rules that prohibit CL and ebay ads entirely, regardless if it's your own or not.

To those who do, MTF comes to mind - it's their rules, not ours. I do know that on MTF that a couple of weeks ago they were prohibiting links to other sites as they viewed it as betrayer to MTF. They have since reconsider when one of their moderators threatened to leave if they didn't change it. RS has never imposed such a rule - we feel if you can't get the answer here, then we will recommend the site where you can get the answer. We don't need another Gardenweb.
