farmer 1,078 #1 Posted January 12, 2011 Last night Forrest Gump was on the telly, great film, pure Americana. If you've seen it, you may remember a scene where he is cutting his grass, "cause he wants to". Anyway i think he's using a Snapper. Shame it wasn't a But then, Forrest wasn't the brightest. Just wondering which would have "fitted" the part, time wise etc..
Sparky-(Admin) 23,129 #2 Posted January 12, 2011 Not sure what year that was supposed to be in the beginning of the movie but WH didnt make a rear engine mower way back then. I think they bought a company that did called REO , and that company had a rear engine job which WH distributed. Mike..........

HorseFixer 2,013 #6 Posted January 13, 2011 Just wondering which would have "fitted" the part, time wise etc.. Well durring that movie when he came home from Viet-Nam and there were a couple songs when he was running as you recall he was RICH $$ by then and the town gave him that mowing Job. That was long after 1969 when the R-26 came out, a couple of the songs I remember were. Doobie Brothers It keeps you running) Michael Mcdonald 1976 Jackson Brown (Running On Empty) 1978 -79 So I would say a rear engine rider and thats fits and that would be an A51, A60, 65, 70, 80 or an 81. which are between 1976-79 One of those would be my guess.

Some of the movie was filmed in the area of my Mom's place in Hartland, VT. Don't know exactly where the mowing sequence was filmed, though. Back then I hadn't been bitten by the bug yet or you can betcherazz I would have been there watching! I did see one recently in the background for an advertisement on TV and got so excited about spotting the tractor I didn't pay any attention to what was being advertised! sscotsman 186 #10 Posted January 13, 2011 Im always amazed what can be found on the internet! just for kicks, I googled "forrest gump timeline" and found: http://www.allofme.com/Timeline/Personal/1...73/Forrest_Gump (notice the "zoom" in the upper right corner of the page) doesnt list the lawnmowing scene specifically, but as someone else said, it was after he got all the money from his Apple stock, so it would have been about the 1976-1978 timeframe in the movie...(I dont remember if it was before or after the "running"..but it was about that same time.) "And cause I was a gazillionaire, and I liked doin it so much, I cut that grass for free." Scot
Don1977 605 #11 Posted January 13, 2011 I have an old Snapper that was my dad's, it is the most awkward mowing machine that I have ever used. I try not to use reverse it just half works. I really hate it when my Wheel Horse is out of commission and I have to use it.
sscotsman 186 #12 Posted January 13, 2011 The approximate Wheel Horse equilivant: 1978 Model A81. from the picture gallery section of Redsquare. (I tried to "quote" the post, but it wouldnt let me) I bet the Snapper got used in the movie just because of "product placement"..Snapper paid some money to get their name on the screen, and an appropriate mower was located for filming. farmer 1,078 #13 Posted January 13, 2011 I think i may have been mis-understood, what I was trying to say was, if you had been the consultant in charge of the mowing scene...and a fan, which model would you have had Tom Hanks riding around on. Need not be the equivalent Snapper model....I was thinking maybe a D with a big deck. The film was all about modern American history, it used iconic brands and images of the day, shame one wasn't a . :hide:
Ken B 3,189 #14 Posted January 13, 2011 Them old Snappers are very reliable and haven't been changed for like a gazillion yrs. or so. If you are looking for something small you can't beat them, and fa get about it when it comes to sucking up leaves! The hi-vac picks up acorns, small branches, you name it. I could have seen ole Forrest on a stripped down B-80.
farmer 1,078 #15 Posted January 13, 2011 P.S. Is the "Funny Farm" film any good? (for the family), we watched Christmas Vacation recently and loved it. :banghead:

It would have been cool to see him riding around on a big mid-70's C-series .. but perhaps not as realistic.. a high school might have owned such a machine, but for a simple mower for Forrest to use (if he was a real person) the little Snapper seems more plausable.. because it would be easier for him to operate.. (and with that, I think we have now officially crossed over to "over-thinking it"! ) Scot
