Rental moving truck.....

Recommended Posts

Horse'n Around

Ok so today I reserved/our Penske moving truck online... my wife was helping me do it and as I was making my choice of what size truck we need( I decided on the biggest one, the 26 ft truck) I failed to move past the screen that states how many rooms each size truck is ment to move  Well, we live in a two bedroom mobile right now with a small amount in storage. All was well and good until she noticed that the 26 ft truck is for a 6 to 7 bedroom house. Then the inevitable question came.... Why such a big truck, it says its for a 6 room place and we only have a 2 bedroom. :hide: All I could think of was "well we have a lot of big stuff" :banghead: So she said, whatever you think is best. Whew!!!! What I didn't say is that I have my 3 Wheel Horses, the Wards Power Trac tractor,a snow plow, mower deck, sand blasting cabinet, Troybilt tiller, 3 spare Kohler engines ,a 10 HP Techy, Oh yeah plus all my spare parts top. Well it didn't get past her... shes too darned smart.... she turned around she said half laughing at me " John, please make sure that all the big stuff doesn't roll around and hit china hutch and the old singer treadle sewing machine that Mom left me ok?" "You know ... the Wheel Horses" :ROTF: I felt like Ralph Cramden after getting busted by Alice ! Busted!!! But somehow it worked out just the same. After that she took me out for Chinese Buffet :hide: Im sure glad that shes understanding, She's the Greatest!

John

We hired a moving company to load up and haul "most" of our stuff for our 70 mile move last year. Some of the furniture and clothes got left for me to get later in the pickup so three of the Wheel Horses could ride in the big truck. :banghead:

Trooper, do you have a second vehicle and large flat bed trailer? I think you are being VERY, VERY optimistic about what you can carry in a 26' van.

After our third move, I told my dear wife of 30 years to "just shoot me" and leave me here. Hopefully, she didn't take me serious.

Best regards, George

I know after we filled a 53 footer and still had to load stuff in my truck and in the boat of all places, we had more stuff than we thought!!!! That didn't include the car trailer and the shop equipment I had left behind at my grandparents!!

The point..... You will be glad that you got the larger truck, and just might be wishing they had a bigger one!!!! Best of Luck John. Hope to hear from you soon!!

Bigger is better John, good move on the large truck. Heck you might see something red on the side of the road (for sale) and you'll be able to say, "Yep, I got room for that!"

Are you planning on draining all the gas outa your stuff before moving day? Image how stinky all your house stuff would be if one of your machine got a gas leak while bouncing around in the moving truck.

I have moved from Indiana to Washington State right out of college and used a small cab over Budget rental truck. It pulled a trailer with my truck on the back. I fish tailed from Indiana to the west coast and had to pry my hands off the steering wheel when I arrived.

When I moved back 2 1/2 years later I rented a Ryder truck that was a 26 footer I believe. Still pulled a trailer and enjoyed the trip so much more on the way back. Maybe it was because of the handling or maybe it was because I was moving 2000 miles away from my now ex-inlaws.

You will be glad you got the bigger truck. I had a jet ski on a trailer in the back of mine with all of my stuff. Still had room to spare.

Good luck on your "adventure" take your time and be safe!

When we came out here I measured the inside of the truck we were renting and then laid out the same dimentions on the floor of the garage..........I musta packed that imaginary truck 10 times before I got every single inch of space used up. As WHfan 74 said....ya gotta be careful where the weight goes too.

I used those white storage boxes and average 50 lbs in each. But I packed each one with a little bit of everything to make each one a solid 'Brick'.......

The only problem I encountered was mamma was a little disturbed that I packed my good grinding wheels and a lot of ammo in her box of sweaters. And I never did find the base to my good vise?????? It just disappeared into thin air!

Make sure you leave room for a case of oranges to take back though.

ED...........

BTW............I guess that leaves just me and 2 and 1/2 wheelhorses in the whole state then  :banghead:

I would need a convoy of semis to move all my crap, that's not counting the stuff in the house!!!! I never plan to move, but if I do, plan on a very big WH auction.

I think were going to be ok. Luckily we have the boxes from Walmart,I get them from the pharmacy and the really nice thing is that they are strong and always one of 2 sizes so it will be a snap to make the maximum use of space. I'm going to pull my Mazda Pup on a car trailer behind the moving truck. I'm going to put the plow blade and frame on it somewhere and make sure its super well secured. I'm going to put the skinniest wheels and tired that I have on the Raider. If I put the tractors side by side the wide wheels will take up more space. I have the bed of my pickup too, I'm going to disassemble the Wards Power Track into its 3 main parts and put it in the Mazda.Once I know for sure I have all our stuff and my tractors packed up and accounted for, I'm pretty sure Ill have room left to put the Porter Cable in the bed of the truck to keep the Wards tractor company and drop it off to its new home with DMK855 on my way thru Tennessee on 40, I'm looking forward to meeting Dwaine even ifs only for a few minutes on our trek to our new home state of PA in there  A good thing happened today,I might have found a house to rent in Pottsville. Once I have the place to move into locked in I will be far less stressed. It is so scary knowing were outta here on the 27th but no place to live yet :banghead: . This looks good, I should know tomorrow or monday at the latest. We are going to buy a place but we want to rent for a year so we can make a well informed decision as to what town we want to live in before we buy a home. A nice thing is that the rental house has a has a big fenced in yard too, a 1 car garage and off street parking.

Kelly, I cant even try to imagine having to move all your tractors implements and stuff, just thinking of it makes my head spin, but the up side is that I realize just how little stuff I have to move :ROTF:

John your home down there was that a rental? Or keeping it for a winter home :banghead:

You could drain oil and gas then stand your tractors up against truck wall and strap in, if space is getting tight.

Buy extra ratchet straps, both 1" and 2". You don't want to be out on the road without a spare !

I second this!! I ALWAYS have extra straps!!!! It NEVER fails that one of my straps finds a sharp edge or corner to rub on going down the road and breaks!! Growing up the son of a truckdriver, I secure everything and do a complete walk around at every stop!! Double check all my straps, eyeball lights and tires, etc. etc.......

I'm with these guys, Get more straps. You can tell your lovely, understanding wife they are "just in case". Of course what that really means is. There may be a tractor or implement on the way  . And, of course , you cannot pass up a great deal, so be prepared. When we moved here 4 years ago, it took 4 loads in a 24' trailer + countless loads in my truck and my brothers cargo van. My current house is twice as big as my little house in town, and the garage is 3 times as big. Plus I have a 30'X50' shed here. So, IF and I mean IF we move again, there will be a BIG auction. And, the new owners are going to inherit the rest :ROTF:. If I can't move it in my car, it ain't going with....... My kids probably won't let me have all my stuff in the nursing they're planning on stuffing me in anyway :banghead: . Good Luck to ya Pat

Im going to take your advise and buy lots more straps. I would rather have them and not need them right away then wish I had used more if something comes loose and gets nicked or munched, who know what kind of damage the china hutch could inflict on one of my poor Horses... ok, ok, more like the damage that Margo might be tempted to inflict on Me should something get rolled over by a Horse or Horses, I shudder to think of the carnage that might get inflicted on poor ole me should something like that happen  I (the soon to be Red Rider aka the Wheel Horse addict formerly know as AzTrooper) would surely end up with more than a few knots and bruises :hide: Im defineately gonna snag more sets of straps for sure, an ounce of prevention and all that :ROTF:

2 more weeks and Im out of here :banghead:
