charger 12 quit running...help

Recommended Posts

Tim

not sure where to put this

not sure if electrical, engine, or something else

looking for some advice.

my brother was snowblowing with the tractro and it quit

after looking it over the the wire from the ignition switch to the coil was fried.

did the following

-replaced wire

-changed the ignition switch-put a new one in

-changed the coil-one from another running tractor

-changed the condenser-one from another running tractor

-changed plug-one from another running tractor

-inspected points- they look fine not burnt or anything put in last winter

-inspected wiring can't find anything obviously wrong

still won't start

any ideas???

First I would pull the plug wire and see if it is firing. Then you said the points looked good, are they opening and closing. Then I would disconnect the kill wire and see if it would fire.

what is the Kill wire?

it is not firing, i'm sure of that

I swapped parts one by one and tried them out on another tractor

the only thing that would not work on the running tractor was the plug

but the plug that would work on the runnning tractor would not fire on the charger.

right now the Coil and condenser are swapped and on the running tractror (C120-8)

what would the cause be for the wire from the ignition switch to the coil getting so hot that it would melt/degrade the insulation?

what could this damage?

any ideas

thanks

Check to see if you have 12v to the coil with the ignition switch on....maybe the ignition switch isn't the same... :banghead: Make sure you have the PTO disengaged also.

The kill wire doesn't exist on normal Kohler battery ignition systems. Magneto and solid state ignitions have wires to ground out the system - which "kills' the spark.

Shorted points or condensers will cause the power wire from the switch to the coil to melt. It's the same as hooking the wire directly to the engine block and turning the key to the ON position.
