Ok... just for fun... if you where a multi ka-trillionaire and could buy a HUGE (physical size I mean) toy what would it be.....

I can't make up my mind if I would want a full blown WWII P51 Mustang with the associated neccesary air strip, hanger, gas staion full of Av Gas etc... etc...

or.....

One of the massive Union Pacific Big Boy 4884 American Built Steam Locomotives from the 30's... complete with an oval of track to run it and all the associated stuff just like the plane above...

OK.... lets hear your fantasies

Tony

For me it would be a 1968 plymouth barracuda fastback formula s gold on gold with a 340 4 speed and a 1968 dart hemi drag car maybe a coronet afx'er too....

Besides that, a huge pole barn with all the geegaws such as lifts brakes lathes end mills cnc and a tiny log cabin in the corner of a 100 acre wooded property. The rest i would save!

I would commission full size working replicas of these:

1146205519_NGxu3-O.jpg

Pennsylvania Railroad T1 locomotive. (52 existed)

and New York Central Railroad, Niagara type locomotive. (27 existed)

Both were the pinnacle of steam locomotive technology, 1930's and 40's.

But sadly none of the real examples of those locomotives survived, all were scrapped.

and a few others as well! :banghead:

(and it *could* be done..if money was no object..a group in England recently did it:

You dont need to build one of those, because eight still exist today! :banghead:

None are operational though..

there have been rumours over the years of attempting to restore one to operating condition, but it probably wont happen..

The Big Boy's slightly smaller sister, the Challenger, is today the largest operating steam locomotive in the world:

Siggghhhhhh... I don't care what anybody says.... the coolest stuff EVER built was done without a single computer and had style..... look at those two locomotives.... pure art deco and built 70+ years ago when people had skills and pride!

Scot, you should see the locomotive that sets in Henry Ford Museum. From what I understand it is the world's largest locomotive. It was built in Lima, Ohio. Supposedly it was built to haul coal but was taken out of service due to its size, it was squashing the tracks. This is the story that I was told as we were doing some core drilling on the copper roof at the museum and we were taken below to see what we would be drilling over the top of. They also have neat items like the limo that JFK was riding in when he was shot in Dallas, Texas. Or even the chair that Abe Lincoln was sitting in when he was shot at Ford Theatre in Washington D.C.. Anyways that Locomotive is Huge. The guy that cast my front weights for Wheel Horses has also cast the door to the engine to that locomotive because the original had a small crack in it and they wanted a replacement. Anyways getting long winded. See Ya, Bye Burly

:banghead:

Google Allegheney Locomotive/Lima Locomotive

They made the Big Boy look small

John,

ah! the Mighty Allegheny!

yes, a most amazing machine..

Built by the Lima Locomotive works..

A much more modern machine than the older Big Boy..

but! there is much debate as to what actually qualifies as "largest locomotive of all time"..is it weight? length? most powerful?

Generally speaking, the Union Pacific Big Boy is considered the largest locomotive ever built, not the Allegheny..but it depends on what measurement you use:

Length - Big Boy Wins.

Weight - Allegheny Wins.

Tractive effort - Big Boy Wins.

Horsepower - Allegheny Wins.

the debate has been going on for 50 years! :banghead:

they are so closely matched, that a clear winner for 'largest" cant be conclusively determined..and they wwere used in different parts of the country, for different types of service, and at different times..and were never compared together at the same time...Most people consider Big Boy the winner..He will always have the crown.

I live nearby and have been to the museum many times in my life, but went again just recently. If you are in the Detroit area, it is a "do not miss". It is pure Americana, from early farm equipment from the late 1800s to historically relevant pieces from the 2nd half of the 20th century.

From what I understand it is the world's largest locomotive.

I don't know if it is the biggest, but Wikipedia lists the Allegeheny as the heaviest. And it is massive !

The Henry Ford will take several days to "see it all". There is a huge outdoor museum (Greenfield Village) and it is also the starting point for the Rouge Factory tour (watch F150s being built) and even an Imax Theater.

If you were on the roof, you had a pretty good view of the Ford Dearborn test track (which was an airport during the Ford Tri-Motor days).

BTW, I worked "next door".

If money were no object, I would move back to Greenwich (CT that is) on a 100 acre estate on the sound, with indoors swimming pool and helicopter landing pad. The care takers could use the Horses to maintain the property and they would be fully cleaned after each run ready for me to play when wanted. My collection of Hemi cars would be unrivaled, and would include the new Hemi Cuda (even though it hasn't been produced)

hi redbirdman i agree with your words regarding lawyers,

Lawyers & polaticians are probably the cause of all whats wrong in this world.

Now if everyone in the world owned a wheel horse there would be no wars ,murders etc because we would all be friends.

just my opinion anyway.

So if money was no option i would buy everyone in the world a wheel horse
