ebinmaine 72,003 #77 Posted December 28, 2024 @Alrashid2 Here's a few pics & some information. These are the two starters. One is from my 1975 C160 Automatic K341. The other I don't recall. They're physically identical from what I can see. The end as assembled BEFORE removal. 1/2" socket on an impact driver buzzed it right off by holding the gear with a GLOVED hand. Inner "cup" washer. This fits over the straight section of the shaft. Note that the spring has not contacted the inner side of the cup at any point. I believe a plain flat thin washer here would be fine. Outer washer. This washer is the diameter of the threaded portion and does NOT go up on the straight section. Note that in the picture you can see a small centering ring which the spring would ride on. That would help keep the spring from binding on the shaft but if you can't find one a flat THICK washer would do the job.... possibly for reduced lifespan though. Clean all parts thoroughly and reassemble with DRY LUBE. I use a graphite powder. Reinstallation was done with the same impact driver and GLOVED hand. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

No wonder the spring disintegrated - probably got binded up at some point. I'll see if I can find some washers tomorrow to make this better! No idea how/where I'd find replacement pieces but thank you so much for the detailed photos and step by step instructions! Alrashid2 382 #79 Posted January 1 (edited) Thanks again everyone for the advice and @ebinmaine for the pictures. I pulled the starter again, and lo and behold that impact driver pulled the nut off no problem (did tweak the spring a bit but I got it good again). Dug through my washer drawer and found 2 that fit pretty well. Reinstalled, started her up a few times, and she worked no problem. Spring shouldn't get torqued and break again now! Thanks guys! When you say bendix I’m assuming you mean gear and spring. You have to find these NOS on eBay individually. The bushing in the gear and front cap wear the most. The bushing in you gear can be pressed/drilled out and replaced. The cap bushing also can be pressed out and replaced. Use a socket for a driver. See measurements higher up in this thread.
