dgjks6 6 #1 Posted January 2, 2011 This is going to be a confusing post, so try to stay with me guys. I got all kinds of questions in no specific order going in my head. Well, the adventure continues. I decided while I was waiting for a in/lb torque wrench to come in to put the governor back together, so when the tool comes I could do it in a few minutes. I used the reassembly section of the manual and pictures from chapter 6 on the Kohler manual. I am confused as to what goes where. So here is how it went - First I finally decided to inspect the governor gear, which had 2 broken teeth. Decided that since I am in for a penny I am in for a pound. Ordered a new one. While waiting decided to put together. Here is what I have - I have been keeping all removed parts in a bag together: So here is how it went: Step 1 - slide cross shaft into place from inside the block: no problem, I can do this Step 2 - pace speed control disc on governor bushing and hread into block: not sure if this is right Step 3 - Install thrust washer, governor gear, copper washer, and stop pin: I don't have a thrust washer or a copper washer, but I move along The copy of the manual I have has blurry pics, so I can't tell if I did this right Step 4 - rotate governor gear assembly to be sure it moves nothing moves so I figure I did something wrong. Turns out I did. First thing I did wrong is this: turns out the arm thing goes up and when reassembled looks like this: So here is what I know: Cross shaft tab goes up and contacts the rod coming out of the governor gear. All ths stop pin is does hold the governor gear in place. Now for my questions: What are these pieces called and are the supposed to be bent? Where do they go? And I am trying to figure out picture 6-39 of the kohler manual - it looks important. I don't know how to get pics copied off a pdf file. So anyway - after all this rambling Can anyone explain how this thing works, and how to properly install. A pic would be great. Oh - and do I need the thrust and copper washer? Niether of these pieces came out of my engine.
VinsRJ 721 #2 Posted January 2, 2011 First you need to straighten out the the bent parts in your last pic for sure. Flatten out the throttle cable holder and then carefully bend both tangs 90 degrees on the speed control. I need to refresh my memory on the installation and set up of the governor, so I will need to pull my manual before I go further. :ychain:
dgjks6 6 #3 Posted January 2, 2011 I am trying new things on photobucket, so enjoy the arrow. OK, so as I inspect things does this speed control disc look OK - it looks worn down on one side As I figure out more things these are my theories - 1 - the thrust washer goes inside before the gear goes on 2 - the copper washer goes on the stop pin Does anyone have a good parts diagram for these engines? I found the one on parts tree, but it is confusing for me. Does anyone have a picture of the governor from a k181?
