Questins about M series

Recommended Posts

The following questions are regarding Kohler Magnum (M series) engines.

Can someone list the similarities and differences between K and M series engines ?

It seems that K series engines are getting pretty scarce, especially K341AS. While not correct for a restoration how easy is it to replace a K engine with an M ? Any specific prefix/suffix/submodel to lok for ?

The only really significant difference that I see is the M uses a magneto instead of a battery ignition system.

Well the AS and M use different oil pans and will not interchange directly,(M is the same as a S block oil pan wise) but most of the time a M will fit in the place of a AS block on a WH, other brands NO they will not interchange, yes the M has mag. ign. uses a different starter, and a few other things but if you get a complete engine it should be a easy swap, as for spec no. thing, what you need to look for is crank size, most WH 10hp and up use a 1 1/8" crank, under 10hp they use 1" so if you pick up a M engine from a tractor that uses a 1" crank, you can use parts from a 8hp engine to do the swap, there are some 1" crank parts that are hard to find ie.... Hydro pulley, but most are easy, anything else???
