nylyon-(Admin) 7,880 #2 Posted December 7, 2010 My mothers cousin John Anderson was on the Arizona, and my fathers Aunt Mae was a school teacher in Honolulu. I have visited the Arizona several times, and have seen John's name on the list. My Aunt continued to live in the Honolulu area, but had only been to Pearl once (with my father) since that day. I had an opportunity to speak with her about that day before she had died and she remembered it vividly, but couldn't finish the entire story since her husband lost his life that day as well. T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,599 #5 Posted December 7, 2010 I spent a few days on Oahu back in 1988. I had the chance to be on the navy base there (Pearl Harbor) every day I was there and I have also toured the Arizona Memorial. It was an eerie feeling as you walked above the Arizona and reading the names, etc. It's something I won't forget. It's been 69 years now since the attack, almost every one who survived the attack, military and civilian, are gone now. Only a handful probably still lives. I'm sure those who survived the attack or had relatives who died there and is still living - that day is etched into their memories as much as the survivors and those who lost loved ones on 9/11. As you prepare for your Christmas gatherings in about 3 weeks, say a prayer for our military and those who are serving abroad to ensure Pearl Harbor doesn't happen again. GlenPettit 1,717 #6 Posted December 7, 2010 Just learned something today about the Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor: Elvis Presley, in March 1961 put on a concert in Pearl City to first start a fund for the Arizona Memorial, completed nearly 20 years later, he was the main driving force & spokesman to get it started and kept his role low-key to the public.
