Save Old Iron 1,568 #2 Posted November 23, 2010 Outstanding idea this time of year - life gets a bit tougher in the fall and winter. We have processed about 12 stray / feral cats in as many years and have decided to keep a few for barn and tractor patrol - haven't seen any damage to my equipment in 10 years ! It was this time exactly about 10 years back when our first feral showed up, literally dragging himself up the driveway from weakness and starvation. If he was more than a day away from death, I would have been surprised. Ate like he had not had anything in weeks, pissed orange jello like urine into the litter box and collapsed into a blanket on our floor. Full of fleas, mites and bleeding sores, I envisioned hundreds of $$ of vet bills or a short trip up behind the barn where only one of us would come back . I made a proposition to my daughters at the time - if we save this cat - Christmas presents will be a little light this year. It brought tears to my eyes to hear each one of my daughters say - without hesitation - "save the cat and forget our Christmas presents". Jerry was saved, and became an "Arnold Schwarzenegger" among cats. No regrets on him showing up at our door. The ones we have found homes for have made very positive differences in the families that have adopted them.
porkchop 1 #3 Posted November 23, 2010 This dog was found with his litter mates in a box with his mother tied to the gate at the humane society. Winter of 1999. When I went there looking for a dog in May 99 I looked at the ones in the front and didn,t see what I was looking for. I heard other dogs barking in the back and ask about them. They said you can look back there but there,s probaly nothing you would want. They where wrong!! He,s getting old now (like me) he will be 12 in april but not a better companion could I ever find for $50.
Operator 7 #4 Posted November 24, 2010 W9JAB That dog looks exactly like one of mine!! About 47 lbs. If she barks [very seldom] she sounds like a poodle, Very lovable. I'll try to get her to slow down for a picture to show. She is some kind of coon hunter, a Kerr someone told me, a hunter all right! moles, tree rats, bunnies, birds. Runs like the wind! She was a drop off at our campground and we had just lost one, the fellow campers said if we don't take her , off to the pound! We did and not sorry at all. Her name, LC [last chance] Randy
puddlejumper 67 #5 Posted November 24, 2010 That would be Mountain cur. Not the most preferred coondog but has a strong following as a squirrel dog.
Duff 206 #6 Posted November 24, 2010 Gracie (Lady Grace) on the right came from the local shelter and has turned out to be one of the most wonderful dogs we've ever owned. She's a Lab/Shepherd mix and is fiercely protective of our home, yet terrific with our guests once we've told her they're OK people! She came first and adopted her "little brother" Chopin, the Golden on the left, who was a pet store "rescue"...on the strict condition that the owners no longer purchase and sell puppies and kittens. Believe it or not, they honored that promise and are still extremely successful without patronizing the puppy- and kitty-mills. Since Sandy and I don't have human kids of our own, these two pups and our quarter horse Champ are our family, God love 'em! We also donate to the local shelter as our finances permit. Operator 7 #7 Posted November 25, 2010 That would be Mountain cur. Not the most preferred coondog but has a strong following as a squirrel dog. Thank you for that info!! LC doesn't bother with big squirrels just babies, I holler at her for it. I like my "tree rats" and feed them. Mountain Cur - Great little dog. Randy
