Double stacking Wheel Horses

Recommended Posts

rydogg

I've seen a few pictures of shelving that members have built so they are able to stack their horses like Rickv does, what works the best and how do you get them up and down without a loader or forklift?? My garage only has 8 foot ceilings, they will be staying there for a while until I get the inside of the pole shed done in the next couple years (concrete, insulation, tin, electrical, heat, etc...). Once the pole shed is done I can just use my farmall tractor with some forks and a pad to drive them on and off of.

I was doing just that today, building a shelf in the corner of my shop that takes 2 tractors underneath and (hopefully) 3 little ones on top.

No pictures yet as my garage looks like a bomb exploded in it, but its just a 8'X5 1/2' shelf with 42" of clearance underneath.

To get the top 3 tractors up there I'm gonna load them into my pickup truck then run them up ramps onto the shelf from there.

There have been a few pictures of similar arrangements on the site. The ones that spring to mind are from TT, Bell, Brrly and Joel (combatmp)

I am hoping I will be able to park one car in my garage by the time the snow falls!!

You could get real tech about it and build it like a lift or hoist. A few years ago I picked up some electric actuators ( I think that is what you call them) and was going to try to build something that you would drive the tractor on and then push the button to raise it up.Then I was planning to drive another underneath it. How ever like a lot of other things I get the idea and not enough energy, time, money, and time, LOL I still have the motor actuators they was from a heavy duty electric hospital bed. Could also use them to make a powered small engine puller too, LOL I doubt I will ever use them now that I have got into the woodworking..Just too many hobbies and not enough time.

Far from elaborate, yet very functional (courtesy of a wallet that's not very thick and lots of free lumber from where I used to work):

I used planks with the "Rampart" top kit and three of us pushed the tractors up onto the shelf.

Keep in mind that you can also store these tractors standing up on the rear tires if you drain the fluids and tie them off so they can't fall unexpectedly. Naturally that's only feasible for machines that you won't be doing anything with for a while.

Here... the shelf build starts later in the thread... this link should take you straight to it.

Some of you newer guys might want to go back and read this from the beginning.... and you may recognize it... it was a three part feature in LAGC magazine several issues back.

Still a work in progress, but heres the one I'm putting together right now:

IMG_3098.jpg

96" wide, 65 1/2" deep, and 42" high. Down below is a 516 and 1267 (with a 42" deck still mounted). You might be able to squeeze 3 "little" tractors underneath if all 3 had 6-12 tires on the back. I couldnt.

Upstairs is 2 "500 Specials", one with wide rear tires, and the third spot will be probably used for my 502. Its not up there yet as I hope to use the sickle bar to mow my meadow one more time before the white stuff sets in.

I would've liked to make it bigger, but I just dont have the room. I either need a bigger garage, or less tractors!
