1967 1077 starting problems

Hi everyone, I'm new here and i have been restoring a 1077 and I had tractor apart to paint some of the parts and when I put it together, I went to start it and i wouldn't start. It turns over but it seems like it floods itself. I would choke it and it would start of a couple of seconds and then when i take the choke off it would shut off. it has done this once before when i left the key on and it drained the battery down and pnce i realized it and tried to start it the battery died and flooded the motor. I took the spark plug out and let it set of a couple of days and it fired right up. It ran fine before both of these times. i would like to know if there is anything to fix this or what i can do to prevent this. thanks.
