persof 14 #1 Posted November 5, 2010 I replaced the starter on my 312-8 this evening and when I tested my work the starter drive gear "plunger" hit up against the engine shroud??? Otherwise it seems to fit fine. Any ideas? Thanks Francis
WH nut 553 #2 Posted November 5, 2010 Are you sure you have the right starter, it looks used
Duff 206 #3 Posted November 5, 2010 Francis, did you take the engine shround off while you were working on the engine? I can't tell from the picture, but if the shroud is slightly out of alignment that may be causing the problem. Duff
persof 14 #4 Posted November 5, 2010 The starter is new from Jacks Small engine repair. I gave them my Kohler engine # and what the toro part #s were and Jack's parts guy confirmed the number. It is case the same physical size as the original. The shroud is bolted in a number of places around the engine preventing misalignment. Francis
TT-(Moderator) 1,129 #5 Posted November 5, 2010 Did you compare the drive style / tooth count / shaft length between the two starters?
persof 14 #6 Posted November 5, 2010 All things appear to be the same except for a black plastic "cover" on the starter gear shaft which is almost 3/8" longer than the bare shaft of the stock one. Can I remove it? I tried using moderate finger force and it didn't budge. Thanks Francis Attached Image
